What do wheel cylinders have to do with a corroded brake line?
What do wheel cylinders have to do with a corroded brake line?
Car - 2002 Honda Civic LX with just over 150K miles.
When I had the oil changed, the mechanic said I had a badly corroded left rear brake line. Since he didn't do that type of repair, he suggested I take it to "a Honda place." This is a video (with narration) of the situation that Honda did:

Their estimate wasn't for just the one line, they quoted an estimate for doing ALL of them.
Like any other repairs, it's a slogan to get at least 3 estimates. The second place that gave me an estimate didn't even mention the lines in his quote, but wrote "Wheel cylinder - remove, install and overhaul. Repack wheel bearings, bleed system and replace shoes." This was just for the one aforementioned.
I'm an old lady and can't understand much of mechanical jargon. Please advise. Thank you.

Re: What do wheel cylinders have to do with a corroded brake line?
The problem is if you accidentally touch one of the other lines while trying to replace the bad line they'll likely start to leak. They all run next to each other.
And they're probably almost as bad as the bad line.
The wheel cylinders are what operate the brakes in the rear, they're a pretty cheap part and it would make sense to replace them if the lines are getting replaced.
Although the "repack wheel bearings" doesn't make sense, they're sealed from what i remember.

Honda wants to do the proportioning valve, and use prefabricated lines, neither of which are really necessary. It's pretty easy to make the lines. Honda factory parts are expensive, and their labour is as well. If i was in your situation I'd go to the independent shop
