I'm having serious car trouble...

ok maybe its not that serious lol BUT lemme explain...I dropped my car back in january on goldlines...never got cambers, never got an alignment because the car didn't pull at all and I had no unusual tire wear...the problem is that my steering wheel shakes at 70mph...and stops at 80...doesnt shake at 69, doesnt shake at 81...just 70-80...well I called a few shops and they told me I would need my wheels rebalanced NOT an alignment so I went and get that done today...that was 3 in the afternoon...it's 8 p.m. right now and my wheel is shaking again...anyone have any ideas/suggestions because I'm LOST....

Some people don't know how to properly balance aftermarket wheels. Take is to Discount/America's Tire, and tell them you need your wheels dynamic balanced with tape weights. If you want, just look at the machine and see that they balance them all out so the machine reads zero...

Most of the people are cool there so they should hook you up.

Kind of unusual the way you describe it shaking only between 70-80. Sounds like it may not be the wheels. Was it fine just after they were balanced? If that was the case then some of the weights may have fallen off.

Oh yeah, definately invest in the rear camber kit at least, then a good alignment.

Hi DoYung,
There have been alot of folks that have the same "bad vibes" that your having.
I have an 03 Civic EX and when I bought it , I questioned the salesperson about
any unusual vibration or shaking at the speed you mentioned. She said that she
also has a new civic and has no vibration and if I did to bring the car back and
take her for a ride and that she would see that it gets fixed. (Nice Lady )
Anyway , I had a slight vibration around the speed that you mention , so I pick-up
a torque wrench and check to make sure that the wheels were "on right" (82 ft lbs)
for alloy and I think 94 or 95 for steel.
Mine were ok , torqued out to spec , after driving the car a while and still getting
a very slight "bad-vib" I think it must be those tires or stuts that just aren`t as good as they should be.
To me it feels like tire vibration and not suspension , when the "firestone" tires wear out , you gotta know that I aint buying them again LOL
I truly think that if you brought it to the attention for a Honda dealer they
would just say "ok we`ll ballance the tires" put that won`t do it.
If by chance that it`s not the tires or wheels and it`s real bad it could
be a bad brake rotor that some how over heated and warped ( it would take a lot for that to happen) so in the end , I wish you good luck but it may just be
"the nature of the beast"

thanks for the advice, frankly this is just a ****ed up situation lol...I got my wheels from speedandstyle.com...and it did stop shaking for a little while today...I think what I'm gonna do is give it some more time and if it continues again, I'm gonna get them balanced once more and if that don't work by then I should have 18's lol...

I had a extremely weird steering wheel shake experience recently. Had my wheels balanced 6 times at 3 different places. Couldn't figure out what the problem was. Finally one day, I took off my wheel locks cuz I was fed up with the shaking, and was going to go buy some steelies... got on the highway, and the shaking was gone.

Would you believe it was the wheel locks? Ran with those locks for 2 years without incident. Got a brake job done recently, and the shaking started after that. Guess they must have under or over-torqued the locks. Now the locks are off for good.

Wow wheels locks.. would of never crossed my mindto think that could cause a problem.

DoYung, try switching the rear tires to the front and vise versa. If it still happens after this, then it could be a bad suspension part or alignment issue.

Do not get tape weight, try your best to stay away from them. I used to work for Discount Tire Co. And we always had people coming back in because the stick on weight would come off in either low-speed areas where the tire was getting wet. Or just in regular high speed usage. They suck big time, unless you hold them on with duct tape then they work but don't look good

Do you have rims? If so, you might need centering rings.

Agreed, but for some rims you don't have a choice ... like me and my 2002 stock Si rims. There's nothing on the outside to hold weights ... no choice but to use stick ons on the inside, but I've never had a problem with them falling off in over 30,000 miles, even through one nasty winter back east.

FACT: whenevery you change your suspension, you NEED to get your car realigned. It is not fair to grip about your car handling wierd when you neglected a serious part of the equation. Get some camber kits, then have it professionally aligned with a 4 wheel machine. Then you will be starting out good from the start. Your wheels could be pointed out or in equally and your car would not be pulling. But they would shake.

Next get your tires professionally balanced again. Putting a small bead of silicone around the weight will keep the adhesive from being loosened by water.

Doing just those two things ended all of my strange vibrations. A good shop will end yours. Go to a shop that specializes in premium wheels. Harder to find, but they know wheels.
