I was driving home on the highway late one night when all of a sudden my radio cuts off on me, then i looked at my dash and the needles dropped to zero and the lights were fading,
basically my electrical was f**ked. I was lucky the engine was still running. I got off at the next exit and as soon as i stopped at the light, the car dies on me
!! Had it towed to the dealership, they said it was the alternator. Good thing i still some warranty left over
Just want to know if anyone out there had the same problem and what could have caused something like that since the car is a 2001.
thx....

i was doing a search on "alternator" and came across this post....
Monday my ABS & SRS lights decided to stay on except for when my clutch was pushed in, my ABS would kick in whenever I came to a complete stop...Also, my radio would not work unless my clutch was pushed in.
My mileage is at 45,000 so no warranty for me. I had my friend test my electrical system and he discovered my battery was getting 19 volts at 3000 rpm and my battery was starting to melt.
Took my little car to honda and they said it was my alternator that had gone bad. The alternator was $700 with install, plus another $50 for my piaa fake HIDs
which i guess a power surge blew them out...anyways I just thought that was funny that your 2001 civic's alternator went bad at 45,000 miles as well

my alternator went i think at 30k......i started to hear this whine, kinda like a supercharger under my hood. It was keeping everything charged, but the berrings in it were fried for some reason.

I have tons of electical in my car with a system. Tested the load on alternator, and everything is fine. Had a friend that tricked out his ride with lights too (think it was a nissan altima), and he had one case where something happened with one of the neons and it went back to the battery and fried the alternator (or did something wierd to it.)
Anyway, I have everything on fuses. Plus just to be safe, always check your load with a load tester once in awhile to make sure everything is ok.
If all else fails, just get a better alternator that kicks out more juice along with a heafty battery if you mod

Just curious - I've had two separate occasions where the alternator died on me ('92 Volvo 740 and '88 Volvo 240DL) and the car still ran fine because it was running strictly off of the battery.
Something must have also happened to the battery for the car to just die suddenly.

The thing is - when the alternator goes bad, the battery light flashes on your dash. At that point, you know you're running strictly off of battery power, and it's time to get your car to a shop ASAP.
If the car just dies all of a sudden with no warning, something must have happened in addition to the alternator going bad.
Yea, my alternater went bad at around 45-55,000miles, so did my timing belt. I drive a 2001 lx sedan, and for some reason on hills it would "roll" back like it was a manual car
. Honda said my timing belt was messed up as well. Got both of them fixed, paid about 700$, and honda paid for the rest, which was around another 800-1000$.

Did the same thing, gauges went to zero and radio turned off. Wasnt charging above 2500 rpm. Put a new one in and today it is sometimes not charging at lower rpms. The problem is a slipping belt. Easy fix. Might have been the original problem too. Check your belts! Works fine in cooler weather when belt is tighter. But when in hot weather, belt expands and slips a little. All stock electronic equipment here.
Mine went at 15000 Km - it whined at first like bhaz413 mentioned. The bearings went - took them 2 days to get a new one in.
Hey BiancaCivic2001, when the car is running, you can disconnect the battery terminals - the alternator produces enough power to keep it going.

There's a service bulletin on it regarding the allignment during install. If you don't put it in the right way, the belt torques the pulley all to hell and kills the bearings thus wasting your alternator...The last swap I got was done by the shop manager himslef and tells me that the thing wasn't alligned properly.
Hope this helps.
My alternator went out at aroun 40,000 miles started winding and buzzing one day without warning, and to note when I took it to the dealer he made a face and said in a disappointed tone that was the problem. Seems they have seen a few of those as of late.

It's sad.... I had a 77 accord 5speed hatchback, it ran 240,000 miles with minor problems. Water pump, and such. I retired it in 2000. I also had an 82 accord auto hatchback. It had 152,000 on the clock, ALL original except the waterpump. I'm talking about engine and tranny, not brakes or such.
I gave the accord to a friend of mine when I bought the 02 civic ex. The 82 is still running strong. Now I miss it.
So far nothing has died on the civic, but it's at 22,000 miles. It seems that honda is not what it used to be. Though the civic is faster and more fun to drive than my accords ever were. Anyone else notice that alternators, waterpumps and such don't last long on the 7th gen?
