replacement struts any better?

Hi all,

One of the "7th Gen Civic Inevitables" is happening to me ... I'm having the front struts on my '01 Civic replaced soon - I'm just waiting for the dealer to receive parts on back-order.

From reading related threads, I know some of you have had struts replaced more than once.

I've been wondering ... Does anyone know if Honda is installing stock struts as replacement? or have they improved them in any way? e.g., quality-wise or performance-wise.

Thanks,
rvp

Rambling - I was quite happy when the dealer said he would replace both struts on warranty and include a free alignment. I had noticed the suspension was noisy and crappy for the last ~5 weeks, just before taking my snow tires off and putting on new Dunlop SP Sport A2s (how frustrating - brand new tires and the suspension craps out!), and I couldn't figure out where the new oil stains on my pavement came from. The mystery has been solved.

I just replaced both front struts at 16000 KM in my 2002 EL. Also replaced both front CV joints. What happened to Honda?! This would have cost me over $1000 if it was out of warranty. I'm seriously considering trading it in.

I want to retract my previous statement about the new struts. The new one SUCK. Driving home tonight , everytime I hit my brakes or turn you can hear the stutrs clunking. I think they went out again.

No one ever replied to my question, but I finally had my front struts replaced Tuesday and I asked the service dude. Well bad news! The replacements are original Honda parts, the exact same model and design as what was on the car new, so they will fail again, eventually, but he said they expect Honda to eventually (when?) coe out with a new design strut and extend the warranty on the stock part. I'll believe it when I see it.

Thanks,
rvp

I had mine replaced under warranty even though I had 39K+ Miles. I noticed the problem before 36K and waited until the oil change. Had to wait 2 weeks but the dealer gave me a loaner car. They also did a 4 wheel alignment no charge! I've been taking my Hondas to this dealership since 1988.

It has been 3 months and 5K miles later. Rides better, mpg is about 2 better. I've been real pleased.

I know the '01 are having LOTS problems with blown shocks. Are '02 and '03 having the same problems too? Just wondering. You would've thought they had the problem fixed by the time the 03s came out though. So if they're replacing your shocks with '03 shocks, it shouldn't be a problem, right?

Exclamation

I have had the struts on my 2001 lx sedan replaced twice in WI(where I used to live) on both sides. On the third replacment of both sides I took them to a different dealer in KY(where I live now) and the service technican said that the struts were redesigned and manufactured at a different plant. Unfortunately the new plant cannot keep up with the demand for the new ones. Thats why the backorders are so long. Since I have had the "new" struts on in March ,now it is July I have had no problems with them so far.

Do your cars feel every bump on the road and give vibration back up through the steering.

Over the past year, I've had 4 struts, springs, steering rack and all related parts replaced and checked by Honda many times, but the crunching over small bumps continues.

This problems seems very small. I don't know why Honda can't fix this problem to keep their good name.

I've never had this problem on a car before.

Mine's really starting to ride like ***. Specifically what symptoms do you guys notice when the struts have gone? I can't really get under my car to check things out for the next week or so because my ramps are about 150 miles away. I've got just under 25K on mine, and based on what I'm reading I wouldn't be suprised if they were gone. Of course, right after I get it back for the rocking chair driver's seat, squeaky clutch, and faulty ABS sensor.

I got that letter from Honda asking me to go in and get these new and improved struts because their records indicated that I had been in more than once to have them changed (twice actually). The letter came with a HUGE appologie and $100 (CDN) voucher which I later used for my RS grill and rad protector. Near as I can tell these struts will be available on the 2004 models and they're actually quite good. They changed manufacturers and issued a complete retooling of the whole strut...I love them!
