need grill for sub, help please....

i was looking at getting a grill for my single 12" sub because i dont want something to hit it and ruin it. my previous sub, 12W3, had a mess grill that was cool, but since my new sub, TDX, looks cool, i want a grill that will protect it, yet still let you see the sub.
i wanted to get a grill like on this W7 : http://www.jlaudio.com/press/W7Pro_Intro.html
i like the chrome/aluminum bars, but i cant find any. i contacted JL, but they wont sell them alone, i have to buy the box.

anyone have a suggestion? does anyone here have a similar grill on there sub?

you could DIY a grille of the type you are talking about, you'd need a few things for it to look good and clean and all, but it could be done

I went with a Kicker grill.

It was the only I could find w/ enough clearance for the woofer excursion not to be a problem.

Yah, I have seen the audiobahn amps/sub grills in mags, their silver flame design is nice! I also believe they have an blue/red LED design for the grillz too...

thanks for the suggestions, that momo grill looks nice, but i want just a few bars, not really something that looks like a rim

i'm gonna go to home depot and lowes, and any other hardware store and see if i can find something there. those bars on the W7 box look like door/drawer handles, i might luck out.

anyone on the site have a custom grill for there sub(s)? pics please.

Hey Slick just a thought of something I did with one of my friends. Try picking up a piece of plexiglass or lexite from a sign shop. We did an install in his car and got a sheet of it about 1/2 inch thick. We had a local shop mill a whole bunch of 1" horizontal grooves cut into it....looked pretty trick..it allowed the sub to breath and added total protection. Just a different thought cause you can have different symbols and stuff ground into the plexi, plus it protects the speaker and allows the subs to rock the car.

slick, that's what i was thinking as well about the JL grille, which is kind of what i suggested in my original post, the only problem i saw was that if you couldn't find ones that were the perfect length, then you would've maybe had to cut and weld them or something like that, anyway, hope it goes well for you
edit: and if you decide to do the lexan/plexiglass idea, then you can also pick it up at home depot or lowes or somewhere like that, and it may save you some $$$

hey guys, thanks for the suggestions. would anyone happen to have a pic of what the plexiglass with slits in it? i can't seem to picture it in my head.
i really wanted to do the aluminum bars, but it looks like a pretty hard project. any clue on what the plexi project might run me? and how easy it to work with? the only cutting tool i have is a single speed dremel.

just make sure when you cut it that you take your time and do it carefully, cause the plastic in the plexi will melt back to the tool, i had to learn from experiance, depending on the cost of the plexi in your area and the thickness of it and all it shouldn't run you too much, depending on your design and all, it shouldn't take too much time. good luck.

just an idea for something quick...go to Wal-Mart, get one of the 6 1/2" boxes with the neons...they have two 1/2" aluminum bars going across, they are about 14"long and extend about an inch above the box...just get 1 and take the bars, drill holes, and use that. and the 6 1/2's aren't all that bad for a house stereo...I've got them on mine right now, they sound pretty good. and all for $35!

ok, ok, I'm sorry...I couldn't help myself. Walmart sucks major , don't bother, blah blah blah, you've heard it all before...

You could go to autozone and buy 3/16" brake line, it's jsut steel tube and then bend right angles into them of appropriate length. Theyr'e only a couple dollars a piece, and you could thread them and screw them to the box that way.
