Turbocharging the Civic Ex 1.7L

Matt here,

I got excellent responses from my question... thanks, so I ran the calculations, and...

I was not aware of the factory 9.9:1 compression ratio. This is a very difficult engineering hurdle to overcome if the engine is to be turbocharged. Even 4 psi of boost moves 17.0 #/min of air, this brings the effective CR to 10:5:1... okay for super unleaded pump gas... go to 6 psi boost and find yourself moving 17.9 #/min of air, and having a CR over 11:1... translation... octane rating of over 100 is required.

So, there are some answers to the boosting question:
1. Hydromethane injection (low pressure): Stabilize the flame front of the combustion event and arrest pre-ignition. Disadvantage: This will add cost, and packaging constraints are already high. Conclusion: It can be done. Extra: This is how the 2003 Lancer EVO VIII develops 280 hp from 2.0L.

2. Run rpm range to 8500, even 9000 rpm. Another major problem with the Civic Ex is that the Volumetric Efficieny of the engine is so high. Translation: 4 valves per cylinder with V-Tec equals ~90% VI... the engine does a fantastic job of packing the cylinders via NA. SO... non-VTec engines are much easier to boost becuase they need inlet pressure to pack the cylinders. Conclusion: Running in the 8000 rpm range is a great place for boosting, becuase the engine VA goes down (50-60%). Putting the boost when the engine cannot pack its cylinders makes for major hp. Conclusion: Not a big problem to overcome technically, but are you willing to run your engine to 8500 rpm?

3. Increase bump height: Take off the cylinder head and increase the head gasket thickness thus reducing the CR. Or, to go even further, change the pistons or the bowl volume in the head. Conclusion: This is too difficult for most people to accomplish, and way to expensive.

So, 160 - 175 hp is a much more realistic goal for a do-it-yourself, and will keep the cost below $3500.

At 160 hp, the Civic will run the 1/4 mile is14.7 sec, at 175 hp, it will run it at 14.23 sec... not too shabby (air temp 68°).

I am interested to read your feedback based on this information...

Grey has a spectacular aura aboutGrey has a spectacular aura about
Using this...

EX:
Bore: 75mm or 2.95 inches
Stroke: 94.4mm or 3.72 inches
VE: 90%
C/R: 9.9:1

Boost Pressure: 6psi
Boost C/R: 12.3:1
Reccomended Octane: 102

LX:
Bore: 75mm or 2.95 inches
Stroke: 94.4mm or 3.72 inches
VE: 80%
C/R: 9.5:1

Boost Pressure: 6psi
Boost C/R: 10.6:1
Reccomended Octane: 97

But, the VE changes from with rpm as you said, so... Try this

Rod length: ~140mm or 5.52 inches (got this from: The Super D-Series Piston Comparo)
Inlet Valve Closes ABDC: A guess at 45 degrees.
Altitude: sea level (0 feet)
Boost Pressure: 6psi

For EX: 12.63:1 C/R
For LX: 12.12:1 C/R

Hmm... I don't know for certain the VE's of our cars and I don't know for certain the Inlet Valve Closes ABDC. Anyone?
