Hollowing CAT

I hollowed my CAT this weekend. Yes i know its illegal. The check engine light comes on when you take your cat off or modify it in any way. Does anyone know if you can get the ECU to ignore that reading. Oh yeah byt he way if anyone wants to do it all u do is unbolt the pipe after the headers and unbolt the section right after the CAT. Then go buy a 12" drill bit extender and a 1.5 inch wood boring bit. there are two stages to it Drill a big hole through the center then just move the bit around everywhere inside and tear up the honeycomb catalyst it should break into pieces. then just dump out all the pieces. Put it back on like it is and its louder and you get a noticalbe amount of power. Im gonna sleeve mine cause engine noise kinda echoes inside that big tube. The good thing is i you get pulled over you technically have a cat, just there is nothing in it lol. When it comes time for inspection get somebody too hook you up with stickers. You can hear the vtec kick in big time without the CAT. Or if you dont want to tear up your cat weld a pipe in its place. Its tite just try it. We need all the power we can get outta these engines + there mega super ultra low emissions vehicles anyways right?

This is a really dumb idea and this is why.

Other then now poluting as much as a oil burning mid 80s V8 domestic, you gained jack **** in power. Even with a test pipe, a NA 4 banger isnt going to see any gains from a removed catalytic converter. In fact thats the LEAST restrictive part of your entire exhaust system. Knowing that, and knowing that the average 2k1+ civic EX gains approximatly 3-5 WHP from a header/catback swap (hell, i think the dyno i saw recently even had an intake installed), what do you think clearing that cat out got you?
Well, if the EPA found out... about 1000 dollars worth of fines depending on your state. It also makes small NA 4 bangers sound like crap at high RPMs. Trust me, I know. Not only is it MUCH louder (which is probably why you think it added power), its an annoying coffee can full of pissed off bees kind of loud. If anything people should be using high flow catalytic converters from companies such as random technologies. Not only do they make custom fit cats, but 2, 2.5 and 3+" universal fit units. they are 50 state legal (legal to use, but its still illegal to remove a functional catalytic converter from a car, at least here in CA). They have been proven (test vehicle was on a dodge viper GTS) on the dyno to make more power then even straight through test pipes. Plus you wont get the CEL, or in trouble by the smog police. Cost 100 dollars. Go spend a f*****g bill and help the ozone instead of being an a*****e.

Werd Joe, werd! Do you think it would be easy for a shop to make a downpipe and put the Random cat on it to make a bolt-on bolt-off hign flo. Or would it just be mo better to but a HP or Kamikaze header. Also, witch of these headers do you like better? Thanks!

well joe your are somewhat right, it does sound like a can full of pissed off bees!!!!!
but the only thing you get is better throttle response, my roommate did that to his 99 si and i cant stand to drive his car, but its loud for a reason, now. the only way to make a hallowed out cat or test pipe useful, you have to have internals.
My roomie has cams and valves in his car and only then did we see a huge gain in HP, oh yea you gotta have a DOHC other than that you just waisted your time, but you probably did get better throttle response, big woo ha, huh?

dumbfuck,
I dont give a **** if he gets a ticket or not. I care that morons are gutting cats, creating upwards of 65% more polutants all while getting .0001 WHP and making theur car annoying to listen to. Why dont you get your head out of your *** and try comprehending what you read before replying.

The cat alone isn't what makes a civic a ulev. I'd bet that the emissions on a 7thgen civic are still pretty clean w/o the cat. If it was the cat doing all the work, every car on the road would be a ulev.

i really wish people would think about the environemt more. It really is a knife in my side to think that my future daughter will gorw up in a world living next to people like you, whom drive all over putting terrible compounds in the air for her to breathe. What if it were your family?

I think some people on this forum are rather selfish.

Rabbit, I can understand your point of view. My exhaust system is stock except for the header, btw. Anyhow, I wouldn't worry so much about the enviroment right now. I have a daughter that is almost 3 and one due in July. I'd be more worried about the people that don't want to go to war than those w/o cats. There may be no enviroment for you daughter to live in period, if some don't face reality....off topic but I felt like saying it.

EDIT: Congrats on the daughter! You are about to see the world in totally different way. There is nothing like having your own little munchkin....

Did you eat paint chips as a child? Did you NOT see the news stories about pieces of ice the size od Rhode island breaking off of antartica? God, I really do hope some cataclysmic disaster happens, if only to kill off some of the stupid genes floating around the pool.

I think MBOW has a point... I don't think the removal of the cat would make that big of a difference.... what matters is the way the fuel is burned/efficiency. I know the cat is just that>converts catylists into less harmful emissions...... but i dont thinkt he whole process is in the cat alone. And come on Guru, if you want to get technical, a lot of stuff we do (as "ricers") is illegal... blue bulbs, no front plates, exhausts (most of them), racing on streets (even if its a little harmless stoplight race) s**t like that, not saying YOU do that, but all of us have at some point in another. So only problem IMO i see with this is the sound pollution. thats it

no, the sound pollution comes from removingyoru resonator and muffler. you wanna sound liek that, thats fine, i dont have to hear it from my house.

The issue is AIR pollution, which is a far more dangerous problem.

you wanna put lights on yoru car? ok, you wanna put a laoud stereo in yrou car? ok, you wanna take off yrou resonator and airfilter? ok, but yrou cat? come on, you should know better.
