Removing the catalytic converter
Removing the catalytic converter
sup,
i have a hollow cat sitting in my garage, i wanna put it on my car but i was wondering how i would get past the check engine light.
it didnt come on when i took the exhaust system off(when i put in my maganflow), but im guessing it'll throw a 02 sensor CEL if the cat is removed right?
is there anyway around this?
thanks.

Yeah, you can get around the CEL. All you need is an O2 simulator. You can get them at Diabloautosports.com. They're about $45. I know that it works because I had the same problem with my car whenever I removed the cat.
Personally, if you ask me, the gains, (if any), are not worth possibly messing up your engine. The o2 sensor is there so that the ECU can constantly adjust your air/fuel ratio. Removing that sensor could result in your engine running to lean or to rich, and predetonation. It could really damage your engine.
Not to mention that running a hollow cat makes your car sound like its running inside a tin can on a loud speaker.

[hr]He didn't say he would be removing the O2 sensors. He was talking about the cat. The reason why the CEL comes on is because the ECU is getting a poor reading from the cat, because there isn't one there.[hr]

[hr]Also, BTW, unless you have removed the cat on your car, then you don't know what it would sound like.[hr]

Aside from all that, removing your catalytic converter is illegal anyways.
if i were you, i wouldn't run without a cat. sure you may get like 2hp from it, but it's there to protect the enviroment by keeping the toxins down. slapping on a hollow cat could cause MORE disturbance in the exhaust system, causing less flow, and more restriction. save yourself some time, effort money, and the environment, and just leave it on.
