just installed HU, now having electrical problems!
i just installed my head unit and everything was fine until i turned on my parking lights, headlights, and blinkers and i began hearing a crackling sound behind the guage cluster and smoke started to come from under the driver side dash. now my guage face and the 3 temp. control ***** won't light up. the tach and speedometer and all the other lights work. i then removed the gauge cluster but no wires seem to be burnt. i know something burned but i don't see it. did i blow a fuse or something, if so which one? please help! thanks.

Yes, I'd check the fuses, but first I'd check your wiring. Did you use a wiring harness? Or did you splice wires together and maybe one of them grounded out? Double check your wires...

i used scosche's wiring harness. it couldn't have been the stereo wiring because i had the center tim open but the smoke came from under the dash where the interior fuse box is. i checked the manual for the fuses but nothing for the guage and temp. control lights. also, i smelled the back of the guage cluster and it smelled burnt. maybe something short circuited and the bulbs went out?
No, don't bother checking your fuses. I did the same exact thing to my car the first week I had it, and I was pissed. What I did, (and what I would do if I was you), is put back the stock headunit, go back to the dealer, and tell them that you started your car, turned on your lights, then heard the popping and fizzing and the smoke came, (in my car the smoke smelled kind of plasticy). Then they'll keep your car for a little while, and when you get it back they will have had to replace a part that will reset your miles back to zero, and you'll have a fresh new sticker on the inside doorsill of the driver's side saying what your miles were before the reset. It should all be done under warrenty. When I got my car back I put the headunit back in, and it's worked fine ever since. I just wouldn't tell the dealership that you were installing a stereo when it happened, because some dealerships will then try to blame it on you, when it was really a defective part that was brought out by the head unit wiring. If you have any questions, email me directly at theguysmiley@hotmail.com. Hope I helped .
