AWD Swap

Don't know if anyone else has seen this...

I really want to do this one day. Not really for performance reasons but just to say I did.
-CRV AWD 5 speed trans with TSX 6th gear added in. Also has an LSD.
-Element subframe.
-CRV driveshaft shortened a few inches.
-He did have to cut a tunnel for the driveshaft. It only creates a hump in the rear seat floorboard.
-CRV rear diff. He eventually locks the diff clutch assembly so it's full time AWD.
-CRV trailing arms, knuckles, and axles.
-In a later video he makes a custom fuel take that mounts underneath, holds about 9 gallons.

Re: AWD Swap

Started this thread 11 months ago now but this is going to happen, hopefully soon. I bought a '03 CRV 5 speed a while back for $850, had some front damage from a deer. Fixed up the body and ensured the drivetrain was working. Pulled the transmission out of the CRV and my Civic, took all the internals from my RSX Type S trans and swapped into the CRV case. Took the CRV internals and swapped into the RSX case. The only real difference is the differential. Installed a Wavetrac AWD LSD, added the RSX final drive and CRV transfer gear (to run the transfer case), threw in new synchros, a longer TSX sixth gear, then closed it up. Swapped subframes between the two as the AWD rear mount is different. This was a direct swap with a little hammering on the firewall to clear the rear mount.

I now have a 5 speed FWD CRV (wasn't available from Honda this way) and a 6 speed AWD trans in my Civic (definitely not available from Honda this way). CRV retained all stock gearing/ratios, just lost the AWD. My Civic 1-5 gearing is the same, sixth is a tad longer and it now has an LSD. The transfer case on the back of the trans was replaced with a cover for now as it interfered with the current exhaust (didn't want to get a custom one yet). The rear diff and driveshaft are sitting in my garage waiting. Also have a Freelander viscous coupler driveshaft I plan on using and then pinning the CRV dual pump in the rear diff. This will allow for 50/50 front/rear power distribution, the VC will prevent the initial shock of power from breaking stuff (mostly on launches). If I were to keep the CRV dual pump function the front tires would spin before the rears would do anything. Plus the front/rear split would be disappointing and it wouldn't be able to handle much power if any is added in the future.

CRV rear arms/knuckles must be used, they bolt right up. The '02-'06 CRV were 5 lug which meant I would have to replace my wheels, both the all season set and autocross set. Luckily, I found a company (FCSrace) that sells a 4 lug hub for the CRV rear knuckles, uses the OEM CRV rear wheel bearing and still accepts a CRV rear axle. For only $125 that is a significant savings over a 5 lug swap.

Hopefully I'll start sometime this winter. Really the only thing holding me back right now is the custom fuel tank as it's in the way of the diff. The guy in the YouTube video I posted created a custom tank out of aluminum (something like 9 gallons). I would really like to make a custom tank that mounts in the stock location like he did but maybe a littler larger. I don't own a welder and have never welded though which would be a necessity. I will need to be able to weld together the custom tank as well as some custom mounts for the diff.

I'm so excited to start working on this

Re: AWD Swap

Do you know what TSX it's from? I can't find any info on if they changed transmissions or gearing from the 1st to 2nd gen but I've always wanted the gearing for 6th to be a little longer.

Good luck man. Excited to see your progress.

Re: AWD Swap

My sixth gear was from a first gen TSX. '04-'05 is a direct swap but you can't order the parts anymore. '06-'08 also needs a needle bearing and synchro for the swap. Ratio is 0.659. From what I can find on the 2009 it's a 0.686, both have the same final drive. You could maybe swap the final drive to a longer one or I have seen a 0.647 sixth gear in the 9th gen Si, might be able to swap into your TSX.

Anyone have any recommendations for a welder that will work on aluminum and stainless steel?
