2001 civic vtec motor questions

I am new to Honda’s so not sure what to do. Here’s what I got, bought a 2001 civic HX 5-speed cheap. Cars throwing 1259 code but the car has d17a1 motor, won’t rev past 4000 rpms. The ECUs got tag stating A02 which I understand is a d17a2 ECU and looking online there is two plugs coming off wiring harness left side back of head around where the vtec solenoid would be. I assume someone blew the d17a2 and installed d17a1 motor and sold it. I bought it for a work car so I want the cheapest and easiest route, do I buy the computer and key to match the motor or do I swap a vtec head onto the nonvtec block. Will it hurt the car to drive like it is and just not rev to 4000 rpm?

Re: 2001 civic vtec motor questions

Your fine running it that way but in a lot of states it won’t pass emission inspection.

Some say you can rig up a few items to fool the ecu saving the expense and time of a head swap and regain post 4,000 rpm power and emissions compliance..

throw a non-vtec ecu - fastest way, but like you said, need key flashing.

bought a 2001 civic HX 5-speed cheap
Now you figured out why it's cheap. It's a homesick abortion.
The ECUs got tag stating
Post the entire part number
cheapest and easiest
If you have and can read a wiring diagram, if you understand what the computer is capable of controlling (and it's limits), if you understand what it is the computer needs to 'see' in response to the vtec command, one might be able to rig up a circuit using just a simple relay

Re: 2001 civic vtec motor questions

Just to make sure, there is no vtec solenoid on the head right?

The block may be stamped d17a1 but you can easily convert it by changing the head.
Make sure it is a d17a1 head (no solenoid)

...........

If so you have two options

-1. Buy a used ECU $100 and flash it $100 (pricing may very)

-2. buy a vtec head and swap to vtec, $100 + time to pull a head and install it.
