01 civic knocking
01 civic knocking
01 civic lx,
knocking noise coming from engine. sound gets quieter when at operating temps but still there. worse sounding on cold starts and my rpms are reaching almost 2000rpms upon start up. rpms don't drop to 1000 rpm until car is fully warmed up. I recently replaced my valve gasket and seals for my spark plugs, I'm pretty sure that the seals busted again (probably due to my error). and I had 5w30 oil in the engine for about 800 miles before changing it back to 5w20 to help with slight oil consumption, however the knocking sound got worse with the heavier oil after a little while and is still there after switching back. maybe oil clearances are changed?

Re: 01 civic knocking
By the time your hearing knocking noises, the engine is to be considered unreliable.
Not sure anyone has posted they have gone more than 5k miles on a knocking engine.
Dont actually do this but here is a real world example of what is going on in engine. Place a hammer against your hand and then push the hammer towards something solid. when your hand touches that solid surface not much shock happens to your hand. That’s how the engine is supposed to work.
Now take you hand and place it on something solid, then hit it with the hammer.
Understand the difference?
Your pistons or rod is going to break very soon so now would be time to sign up for AAA and install the UBer app on your phone..

Well true if it’s just piston slap the engine can go a long time like that.
Suppose you can sniff test the oil to see if it reeks of gas, granted not scientific method but bunch guys hanging out around the engine bay with a beer in hand will swear by it. Good friend Kevin even will taste the oil, he will swear if it’s got metal in it he will feel it in his fillings

Re: 01 civic knocking
5w20 is doing you no service at this point.
The noise got worse because the barring degraded over time. But that degradation will increase with 5w20. You want to cushion the now large gap in between the crank and the rod, where the bearing used to be.
................
If you want to drive it as long as possible before it fails then move to 10w30 and a full bottle of lucas hd. It will still knock but not as bad. As seen bellow.
