2002 Honda Civic EX cranks but will not start
2002 Honda Civic EX cranks but will not start
I have a 2002 Honda Civic EX. The car cranks but will not start. I have changed the purge valve, vent valve, cam sensor, crank sensor, spark plugs, the relay going to the injectors, and changed the fuel pump. The only time the green key on the dash blinks is when I turn the car off, which makes me think the immobilizer is working correctly. I am not getting a code on the computer. I do not know what to check now. I have even tried spraying around the vacuum lines with starter fluid to see if I can hear a difference in how it runs. The car will start after several attempts. Sometimes I can go start the car on the first try. I am trying not to take the car to the dealer. Can anyone suggest what I could check now?

Re: 2002 Honda Civic EX cranks but will not start
One of the problem is that the car not starting can happen anytime. I have had it happen early in the morning, after driving to town. The problem would be a lot easier to fix if it happened all the time. For example, I got in the car this morning and it started and ran good. I went to get gas and the car started good. Stropped at a store, and the car cranked and cranked. I waited a couple of minutes and tried again and the car started. The only pattern I see is when I got gas the problem started again.

okay that sounds like an electrical problem to me,
clean and/or replace all main battery connections/grounds/terminals,
battery terminals, ground to frame, ground from engine to frame etc etc

Re: 2002 Honda Civic EX cranks but will not start
You need to check for fuel, compression, air and spark.
Checked your air filter lately?
Timing belt service performed lately?
Does the green immobilizer flash like crazy when cranking? Try the spare key to see if makes a difference.
Search on "7th gen civic cranks no start" here on this site for all kinds of info to troubleshoot.

Re: 2002 Honda Civic EX cranks but will not start
I will try that but, when the car cranks, it is very strong like the battery is fully charged. The engine is not dragging like a weak battery.

Re: 2002 Honda Civic EX cranks but will not start
so it starts fine when the engine is cold but it has issues once its warmed up?
Re: 2002 Honda Civic EX cranks but will not start
I took the battery to autozone and had it tested. I cleaned the terminals on the battery and secured the connection. I do not think my problem is the battery. If it was the battery, the car would not try to turn over. The motor cranks fine, it just will not start.
Re: 2002 Honda Civic EX cranks but will not start
The temp of the engine seems to not matter if the car will start. I have had the car start cold and not start cold. Start warm and not start warm. I am going to change the main relay tonight to see if that helps. I am out of ideas.
Re: 2002 Honda Civic EX cranks but will not start
i never said your problem was the battery,
did you check and clean any of the other connections like i suggested?

you come here asking for advice, but you dont want to try or take the advice that is given,
and now all of a sudden YOU seem to be the expert.....

i give up

Mikey1, you have not had anything to offer that was helpful to me. You suggested checking the battery and I did as you suggested. I check the terminals as you suggested and now you are trying to tell me that I am not doing what you suggested. I am surprised you have been on this forum as along as you have and had nothing to contribute. I never said I was trying to be an expert. I was only stating that I do not understand why it could be the batter or connections, Like you suggest if the motor is cranking strong.

where did i suggest checking the "battery"....please point that out
that is only HALF of what i suggested, did you do the other things i suggested?....i already know the answer is no,
well i DO understand why, but you dont seem to want to listen
and this is coming from somebody who joined a few days ago

mikie1, my bad, I should have typed battery connections. I went ahead and had the battery tested just be be sure it was ok. Yes, I did check all the connections you suggested. Any ground I could find seemed to be tight and not rusted. You are correct, I am new to this site. I came here looking for help with this car issue. I know it is hard to troubleshoot a problem from the other end of the computer. I tried to be as descriptive as possible. I am not trying to be an expert, I am humble enough to come to this site and ask for help. I have a question for you, If the car cranks strong and the battery shows no signs of being weak, how can this cause the motor not to start?

Re: 2002 Honda Civic EX cranks but will not start
Did you ever check if you were getting fuel and spark? You said the air filter is new, did you ever check to make sure the intake isn't clogged?
I've seen a few cars that seem like they're cranking fine but won't start. Throw a booster pack or jumper cables on them and then they start right up.

Re: 2002 Honda Civic EX cranks but will not start
Try cranking it and then pulling the spark plugs to see if the fuel is getting to the cylinders
Re: 2002 Honda Civic EX cranks but will not start
I tried that and the plugs looks like they were dry. I thought it might be the main relay that powers the injectors but I had already replaced it. Is there a way to see if the injectors are getting told to fire? Thanks

Back probe a connector and see if the voltage readings change?
