Punctured timing belt cover??? Help

Hey guys, so I've been hearing a little bit of a funny noise the past couple days and i popped the hood just now and the timing belt cover has clearly been punctured from the inside and something is still slightly sticking out and you can feel tapping (the noise) if you feel the timing belt cover. See the pictures below if this is confusing. Also its a 1993 cx (d18b8).

I don't plan on driving it anytime soon obviously but I am planning to fix it soon. Any ideas what could have caused this? I haven't been able to pull the timing belt cover off yet because the valve cover has to come off too. If anyone has ever seen this before or thinks they know what happened I would love to know so I can figure out what happened. Thanks a lot guys!

DO NOT START THAT ENGINE until you find out what's trying to escape and fix it!

If it chucks the timing belt all the way, it's gonna be expensive.

Re: Punctured timing belt cover??? Help

My 85 did that the next day after I let my son take it to the senior prom. On the way back from her class at church it died. About a couple miles from home, it quit at a red light. Couple guys pushed her into the Denny's parking lot. One of them was a mechanic and he popped the hood to take a look. The cam shaft had broken in two and only thing holding the large pulley on was the bolt screwed back into the cam shaft. It had let the pulley indexed around and the pulley was wobbling enough that it cut a perfect circle threw the plastic cover and was hanging out about a 1/16" on one edge. It had finally bent the four valves and it died at idle at the light. He ask the wife if it was making any noise. She said yes but she was praying it would get her home. He told her he didn't think it would get Jesus home then. I repaired it. Had it spread all over the garage. That old 85 had the 4 valve system with the small precombustion valve and no cat. It had three brackets just for all the vacuum controlled emissions system. Must have been a nightmare for mechanics to work on it. Wife still laughs about the mechanics quote all these years later when she walks through the garage and I have some motor all pulled apart.
