2003 Rear brake light and turn signal issues
2003 Rear brake light and turn signal issues
I've tried finding a solution online but everytime I google this I just find hundreds of links about the brake light staying on when you shut the car off.
Anyways for starters my fiance has a 2003 Honda civic lx and the right rear brake light stays on at all times while the car is on and does not work as a brake light at all. For example when the car is off the light is off but it doesn't come on even if you push the brakes. That is problem number 1. My second problem is the right rear turn signal does not work at all I have tried replacing the bulb and I have tried wiggling the wires but no success.
Could anyone on this site work with me on getting this fixed? Shops where I live will rip you off so bad you wouldn't say they charge an arm and a leg because they might as well be asking for your heart and your brain.

Re: 2003 Rear break like and turn signal issues
How about the right tail, and marker ? They work normal.
Check the grounding for the right sides bulbs.
Re: 2003 Rear break like and turn signal issues
The tail and marker work. I noticed the clip the signal bulb goes into has pretty corroded prongs in it could that be why it isn't working? Also where would the grounds for these be. Another thing that might be useful info is that the previous owner had a hole cut in the carpet and floor on the driver side floor from either him or a mechanic accessing something in the floor I'm assuming electrical?

Brake light: Get a 12V test light or cheap DMM to test for voltage to right side. If your other brake lights work...voltage is making it all the way back.
Signal light: You can clean up the contacts, but be careful not to mangle them. DMM would allow testing of voltage present, and proper grounding.
Grounding: Should be on same side or near center. Your tail and marker should utilize the same grounds as others on that side though.
The plus to a test light is the super sharp tip that can pierce insulation with no damage or need to expose copper.

Re: 2003 LX Rear brake light and turn signal issues
Do you have a voltage meter? I could test and see if the wire is getting voltage. Maybe the harness that holds the bad has some corrosion or something in it. If you're not getting voltage then I'd try to tray the wires to to where the trunk meets the car and see if there's a short or something in there.
If you still don't have any luck then I'd just run a new jumper wire from the functioning brake to the non functioning one so that both are working properly. You definitely don't want to take one up the rear for not having enough brake lights.
As for the turn signal, I'd say check the wire for voltage as well and see if you get anything and then try to trace it back to the dash. I'm assuming your front signal works? This means that the relay is working and worst case if you can't find the short you can always run a new line and tie it into the front turn signal wires.
If you're not looking to pay a shop to troubleshoot it then that's what I would do.

Ok so after messing with it for a while today I managed to get the park lights working right and the brake light but the turn signal has no power I've even tried swapping the clip out with the left 1.
Also could you tell me what the thing the bulb plugs into is called? You know the piece that the wires plug into.

Re: 2003 Rear brake light and turn signal issues
So got any ideas why the right rear turn signal ain't getting power? Like I mentioned before someone accessed the a panel in the floor on the driver side floor board. Is there any of the lighting wires in the floor there that could of got messed up? I could take a picture of what I'm talking about if it would help.

Re: 2003 Rear brake light and turn signal issues
The wire color for right side signals will be GRN/YEL. Start at the problem socket and work forward with a test light (probe wire with sharp point provided) With the signals on. The bulb will be a good load, and indicator once you reach voltage.
Repair open, or splice where voltage starts with replacement single wire back close to socket and tap into existing wiring. (jumper across the open)

You don't have to buy online, you can buy a test light at most parts stores and have it right away. Probably at stores like Walmart too.
You could attach 2 long wires to a good light bulb and have a test light. BTDT.
