1995 Civic auto trans ratcheting noise while coasting in 4th gear

I recently acquired a 1995 Civic EX coupe. When driving in D4, I get a ratcheting/whirring/grinding noise when I take my foot off of the accelerator. As long as the car is under load Or, If I drive the car in D3, I don't get the noise. The Civic has about 200,000 miles on it and otherwise, runs great.

We've checked the lockout solenoid and that seems to engage/disengage fine. We've also drained and topped off the transmission fluid (not a flush).

Any suggestions are greatly welcome. Thanks in advance.

Did any small pieces come out of there when you drained the fluid? Anything solid stuck to the magnet?

Kinda sounds like it may be losing one of the thrust bearings from any of the 4th related gears, allowing the gear to walk back and forth as you load and unload it.

Time for a teardown and inspection?

Thanks for the reply.

Nothing solid came out. No parts. There was a small accumulation of metal dust stuck to the magnet. Even with the fluid swap though, the ATF is brown.

I was hoping that this was one of those 'Oh yeah, that happens to all of these' kind of problems. I'm prepared to pull it apart if need be. I just wanted to get some clues as to what it might be.

Sorry, I can only make a guess based on your description. At our shop we don't overhaul Hondas automatic transmissions so I don't have a lot of first hand experience to offer.

Yeah... The trans holds like 7 or 8 quarts and you can only get out about 2.5 with a single drain and fill so there's still a lot of the old fluid left in it.
