Should i replace my front struts?
Should i replace my front struts?
I have been dealing with a lot of creaking and awful noises when i drive and go over speed bumps and such. I took my 2002 honda civic in for an oil change and they told me the struts needed to be replaced. My honda has 156000 miles on it. My question is if this is really a big deal and if i should make the nearly $700 investment to fix it? Thanks
Re: Should i replace my front struts?
When the struts get worn the car gets increasingly more difficult to handle in poor situations like emergency braking or swerving. There are DIYs on this site that can help you replace them yourself - all you need is a jack and socket set plus borrowing a tie rod separator from your local auto parts store. The first time you do it will take time but if you're just looking for stock replacements you'll save like 550 off that price.

Who's they? The minute lube guys looking to pocket a bunch of your money? Before I replaced anything I would be making sure it needed to be replaced. There's a bunch of different front suspension stuff that can make noise. Nothing would **** me off more than to spend $700 and not fix my problem.
Re: Should i replace my front struts?
It's pretty easy to tell yourself when they're bad. Do the bounce test or even easier if the front end dives too much under heavy braking then the fronts at least need to be replaced.
Re: Should i replace my front struts?
For $700 you could diy all 4 cheaper.
Does it float over bumps? Are they leaking? If it still rides and handles good to you then I wouldn't worry about it.
156k is a good amount of miles and you would benefit from getting them replaced.

Pretty much what GolNat said.
If you do end up replacing them, you can get KYB GR2s or Tokico HPs (OEM replacement shocks for around $300ish. And if you can't install them yourself, most shops will charge like $100 to install. A lot cheaper than from a dealership.

Re: Should i replace my front struts?
with just the note that the HP blues tokico are stiffer riding, but last longer. GR2 or the newer version excel-gare stock replacements, or the koni strt's. but then, the jury is still out if they are really bad. they are consumables, though, one day they will go like my bones (ouch!)
Re: Should i replace my front struts?
I have blues on the front and koni strts on the back since Tokico was having production issues for the longest time. If I did it again I might go all Konis though. They're approximately the same except maybe a tad stiffer and after trying for over a year to get rear struts from Tokico I don't want to deal with them anymore.
Also, when I bought my Konis they had the same warranty as Tokico but that's when they just came out so they could have cancelled that by now.
However, if you're just looking for replacements for worn out struts you can get lesser performance brands for much cheaper.

Re: Should i replace my front struts?
i think the problem Tokico had was actually distribution, but then it was the last year or so. maybe during the unfortunate tsunami, it would have been production.
Re: Should i replace my front struts?
Regardless, they were difficult to contact and nobody was able to give me a time estimation on when they might start delivering new product to vendors.
The product itself is great, it's just the service that is lacking.

ah, OK, if that was the case, it seem to have been the distribution - contract issues and change of distributor.
