Re: trans problem

Do you have an automatic or manual transmission?

When was the last time you have the fluids changed?

How many miles are on your transmission?

Do you drive aggressively very often?

Re: trans problem

I hope they were changed during tune ups. What color was the fluid? was it a reddish color when you checked?

Im leaning towards the torque converter dying..

Re: trans problem

I have an 04 Civic Ex Coupe D17A2 and today I was going around 45 in 4th gear. when i accelerate and my engine just revs up to around 5400rpm and does not kick in the transmission I pull into the nearest parking lot and park. I try every gear inc/ reverse and get no acceleration. The car just revs and idles normally. I then put the car in park and turn the car off and open the car door close the door and turn the car on. The car would run for a few seconds and not have any problem. I get around 10 mph and the problem happens again repeatedly. When i turn the engine on the car makes a constant whining sound. I need multiple opinions before i do anything.

What is your opinion on this problem?

Don't take my word for it, but I think the EX has a different final drive ratio. It'll prob still physically work, but I'm not sure if you would need any type of ecu swap, and I'm pretty sure it will throw a code. If it does come down to having to replace your transmission, your best bet for a smooth swap would be to stick with a DX/LX.

I also agree that it could be a failing torque converter, as the symptoms fit. Get it checked out though before you do a swap or anything drastic, make sure it's planned... auto tranny problems can add up to a lot of $$$ quick if you chase symptoms without knowing exactly what it is.

Re: trans problem

AFAIK the whining sound is probably coming from a bad torque converter and is probably your issue. Once again, as you said, wait for a few more comments before doing anything drastic. You could do a drain and fill of the trans fluid 3 or 4 times to see if that improves it.

If ezone responds, I would follow his advise to the letter. I believe he'll give you the best advise given the information you provided. He's an everyday Honda tech at a dealership who actually truly cares that the job gets done right and is exceptionally good as his job....at least that's what I've come to believe based on his posts. I believe he's the go to guy when everyone else fails is what I'm saying.

Re: trans problem

Ok yea i'm gonna prob get it towed to an AAMCO or other shop tomorrow or later this week. I have a car in the meantime so ill let you know what happens.
Yes I've been seeing the torque converter pop up on a lot or forums for the same issue but alongside whole transmission problems so I didn't want to do a complete overhaul just yet. Its gonna be expensive either way. My engine had 165k on it so i'm not surprised it happened. Will a new torque converter be required if i had to get a new transmission anyway? Cause with 165k it might not be worth it to get a new one. I still owe $2400 on it.

That's all up to you to whether you think it's worth the money to fix it.

I bought my 02 ex auto brand new a little over 10 years ago and have put about $2200 in parts in it over the last two years. I paid it off 5 years ago. IMO, since this car was always kept in excellent condition from the beginning, I'm going to keep until it just falls apart or some dumb *** hit's me and I can't avoid it. I've experienced many of the common problems/symptoms with this vehicle to know how to repair it.
