Opinions on civic I would like to purchase
Hey everyone, new here to the civic forum. I don't have much experience with civics, so I figured I would post on here and see what you all think of this civic I'm interested in. Please let me know what you all think and if I should ask the seller any questions. Thanks everyone!

Re: Opinions on civic I would like to purchase
I wouldnt pay $3500 for that if someone had a gun to my head.
The things that concern me-
1.The fact that the engine runs OBD I tells me it's not a 1998 since pretty much everything after 1995 runs OBDII. The B18C1 was made from 1993-2001. I'd say the engine is really a 1993-1994 model. If it is older than a 1998 then it's an illegal swap since you cant swap in an engine older than your chassis for emissions reasons. You might not be able to pass inspection.
2.I would be willing to bet that the engine light coming on for "cylinder position" is not as simple as a wiring issue.
3. Check what kind of brakes/rotors he put in. Make sure he didn't cheap out.
I would keep looking.

not to bad car is clean would have been better if it was in a EX shell or Si shell to get the powers and sunroof.
It could be wiring for the cam position its probably a bad sensor or the OBD1 harness is bad.
Just because it is running OBD1 is not a bad thing it actually is a good thing.
the motor could very well still be OBD2 but the guy has a conversion harness at his ECU to be able to run obd1. A lot of people do this since the OBD1 ECU's are cheaper and easier to chip/tune
I wouldn't worry about legalities to much no one will pop your hood and dig your motor to find out its year.
if the car runs and drives great body looks mint, needs no other other work other then listed in the ad then id offer 2600 -2800 i wouldn't pay more then 3 for it since the motor and trans is worth almost that plus the work hours needed.
just look at the wiring job under the hood if it looks clean and no hack job of spliced wires i think it would be ok.

Re: Opinions on civic I would like to purchase
Just check the vin on the engine block to make sure it is what he says it is....If it doesn't show 98 he's obviously lying and is probably lying about the cylinder position issue. Swaps are easy to mess up in the hands of an amateur, just be cautious. If it matches up and hes just running obdI still check what kind of brakes/rotors he used, also what timing belt/tensioner/wp he used. There are lots of horror stories with off brand tensioners going bad lol

Well I took a look at the civic today, it is a 98 motor, I checked the vin on the engine. It is in great shape, only a few little scrapes and dings, no rust. The underbody was very clean as well as the interior.

Re: Opinions on civic I would like to purchase
looks like poorly done project car. anyone who spends $50 for an illegal junk hid kit makes me question what kind of corners he cut elsewhere. windshield is cracked? gimme a break. that shouldve been fixed years ago free with insurance or pay the $150 for a new one. obx exhaust? sony cd player? need i continue? lol. i bet it has autozone brakes and a stant thermostat too. i would run and dont look back. nobody sells a car like this if its in great shape. and i can tell without even looking at it in person that its not.
