Auto-Tranmission Failure

hey guys just wanted to first introduce myself. I've been on HT for years, so i've been around the block and i do know how to use the infamous search tool.

I have a few questions about the auto transmission and possible failure.

Store of the car very quickly
1.) Bought a used 2004 Civic LX with 217K miles on it 2 days ago
2.) Seller indicated the reason he was selling it because of a blown headgasket

So as I attempted to drive it over to my house, the car would barely move, and was almost nearly impossible to climb any kind of hills. I blamed the headgasket at first but then thought about it again, it should still have enough compression to get the car going, at a descent speed.

So after reading a number of post about the factory transmissions failing like crazy. I suspect the clutch disc are fried and the filter inside the transmission is totally clogged. I checked the dipstick last night to get an idea if the transmission levels were too low, but it reads a little over the top line. Fluid looks fairly clear, and doesn't smell burnt. So where should i start next after I replace the headgasket?

At one part in my adventure home, I had to rev the car in N and drop it into D to get it moving. Of course this isn't the greatest thing to do, but if you gotta get it home, sometimes you gotta do whatcha gotta do.

Thanks guys in advance and looking forward to the responses... Oh BTW no mil light is present.
