DIY: Radar Scanner Hardwire with Remote Mute

To start off, I realize there is a DIY for this already but this includes the wiring of a remote mute and its pictures are down so i decided to remake it.

To start off your going to need the following things:
Trim piece removal tool or small flathead
Pliers
Flashlight
12mm wrench
1/4" drill bit
Hardwire kit from Safe-n-sound1.com (not an advertisement but they have the best deals/quality i could find & a 1yr warranty)

Step 1: Trim Removal
Start by taking off the interior trim pieces that will be in the way of the install. You will remove the drivers side A pillar, the shifter bezel, the fuse/footwell covers and the cover to the side of the dash.

To take off the A pillar cover just pull on it and it should pop off, if its difficult try pulling the weather stripping away from it, this will also just pull off.

<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0813.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0813.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Next open your door and look at the side of the dash, there is a cover there that needs to be removed. As seen in the picture there is a small notch to fit a small flathead in, insert the flathead into the notch and gently pry the cover off.
<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0816.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0816.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Next we will move to the shifter bezel. Insert your trim remover or flat head underneath the top bezel and pull up evenly until it pops off, do the same thing for the bottom bezel but start at the bottom and off the center so you don't hit the clip as shown in the picture below.
<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0818.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0818.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0819.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0819.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0820.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0820.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Then remove the fuse cover, there are two plastic locks to be tuned and it will come off. Then remove the footwell cover, there is one plastic nut to unlock and a clip to pull down and it will pull off.
Step 2: Power and Ground

Take out the quick splice from the package and find a wire, (if you want to do this professionally use a posi-tap) i went with the yellow/green wire (you will have to peel back some tape to get to it) in the accessory harness because it is a switched 12v source, put your quick splice over the wire, grab some pliers and clamp it down until the two ends snap together, then re-tape.
<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0832.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0832.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0834.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0834.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Then take the female end from the hardwire cords red power cord and slip it onto the quick splice you just made as shown in the picture.
<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0838.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0838.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Now its time to ground the cord, use your 12mm wrench to unscrew the bolt located under the steering wheel (gold one shown in picture)
<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0840.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0840.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
unscrew it just enough to slip the ring connector under it and then tighten it down.
<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0871.png" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0871.png" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0872.png" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0872.png" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
At this point test your radar detector to make sure the cords functioning properly before wiring the rest of it.
<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0842.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0842.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Step 3: Running Cords

Take the plug that will go into your radar scanner and wire it up from under the dash and through the side dash panel as shown in the picture
<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0847.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0847.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Then put the cord through the space that leads up to the A pillar
<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0849.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0849.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0850.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0850.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Run the cord up the A-pillar either by taping the cord down or wrapping it around the harness, make sure not to cover the clip holes.
<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0852.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0852.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Tuck the cord into the headliner until you reach where you want your scanner and then leave a little slack for it to reach.
<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0854.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0854.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Next we will be running the remote mute. I ran mine to the center console by the shifter. The easiest way to do this is to run the cord straight to the center console and worry about tucking the wires later as shown.
<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0843.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0843.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Pull the wire up through the center console and leave it where you want to mount it
<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0844.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0844.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Then tuck the wire away under the centor console and dash.

Step 5: Install remote mute switch

To install the remote mute switch into the console you will need a 1/4" bit (for the safe-n-sound1 kit). Drill the hole wherever you'd like the switch to be. Warning: if you mount it as far up on the console as i did you will need to slightly destroy the plastic beneath it so it can sit flush.
<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0855.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0855.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0856.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0856.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
If youre working around people that like to play jokes, lock your car before you leave to drill the hole or you'll end up with a van's engine cover in your front seat.
<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0823.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0823.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Slip the remote mute switch through the bottom of the hole you drilled and out the top, screw the included nut over the top of the switch and you are done. (i painted the nut black so it would blend better with the console)

Step 4: Cleaning up

Tuck all of your wires away and use zip ties to keep them together, i zip tied the excess together and then zip tied the excess under the console
<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0857.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0857.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Once you are done there should be nothing hanging down near the pedals
<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0859.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0859.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Then just reassemble the car by snapping back on the trim pieces and you are done. Here are pictures of the completed install:

<a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_0869.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k114/ryanj7755/IMG_0869.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
