I doubt this will work but have you tried manually putting the car back into 1st when you are almost at a stop. See if you can then manually put it back up thru the gears as you accelerate. Also if it is a cold there as it is here in Ohio, try letting the car warm up before you drive it. More then likely it will need a rebuild, so if you can sell before it completly goes out you might get a little more $. Regardless, you won't get too much out of it in that condition. If the car is in good shape it might be worth repairing, call around you might find somewhere fair in price. Also many slavage/junkyards will install a used one with a fair warranty. If you do go that route i would make sure you find a tranny out of a 04/05 since the 01's-03's are more problematic.
To add, the reason the mechanic did not give you a set price is probably since he does not know what is bad untill he cracks into it. Depending on what is destroyed will factor into more parts and a larger bill. Regardless he should be able to give you an estimate for the lowest/highest it will end up being. Unless you live in BFE you really need to call around to find a good price, you will be surprised of the options. Also can call around part stores and get any recommendations, word of mouth goes a long way..

shifting gears makes me think Clutch...You can try this: MAKE SURE NOTHING IS IN FRONT OF THE CAR!!!! Then put the car in gear, push in the clutch and then try to start it. If the car jumps forward then your clutch is bad...A clutch is much easier to replace than a tranny rebuild.

It could also be one of the bearings going out too....

I just rebuilt the tranny in my 01 EX. The AUTO Tranny is amazing as it is complicated... It could be the clutch plates inbetween the gears, it could be the torque converter. If a mechanic wants to take it apart, you should just rebuild the whole tranny. I spent $140 on torque converter, and another $210 on the rebuild kit and fluids and other lil things and then spent two in a half days rebuilding the tranny with a trained tech friend of mine. And when I say 2 1/2 days, I mean 2 1/2 days with only fours hours of sleep. If you are lucky enough to find a used tranny for a few hundred, I'd do it. Having a mechanic rebuild the tranny for you will run you about 1500-over 2000... Good Luck...

This is exactly why I wouldn't let the Mechanic take it apart... I could just see him calling me with $$ in his eyes lol...

It's looking like I may just sell it as is and see what I can get for it?

The body isn't too bad but has few dings and dents and a the front bumper is cracked... The engine has no issues at all and the interior is pretty clean too.. I'll probably only get around 6 for it..
