according to the ex emblem on the back its an ex...but i dont think vtec engages and the valve cover just says "honda" instead of "VTEC honda"

i believe this is the vtec solenoid right? (circled in red)

Re: someone tell me what i got
i know they do but im tryin to figure out if the prev owner swapped a non vtec engine for some reason. is that a vtec solenoid in the pic?? if it is anyone know why vtec wont engage?
Re: someone tell me what i got
That is the solenoid though. Why it doesn't engage could be a number of things. I don't know them off the top right now. The screen of the solenoid could be dirty. I believe there's a DIY floating around here.

Re: someone tell me what i got
yes, that is the solenoid. It would not be bolted in there if not vtec head (no holes for bolts, i believe).
valve cover were interchangeable, i do believe.
mine EX came with steel wheels, BTW
now the big Q: how much oil in the engine?!? fast reply, please - this important

Re: someone tell me what i got
when i bought it on wednesday it was maybe 1/4 up between the 2 holes in the dipstick. so about 3/4 a quart under full...i should probly add some oil lol
all i have is synthetic though...it doesnt matter if u mix synthetic and reg oil does it?

Re: someone tell me what i got
at this point, no.
good, it's not oil starvation...
potentially ECU/wiring, etc? removing the unit and cleaning throughly?
PS what makes you think it's not engaging?

Re: someone tell me what i got
in the meantime, non working vtec throws a code and goes to limp mode unless it's running a LX ecu?... it that what you experiencing?

i have no codes. and i doubt the ecu hhas been switched or tampered with...the car is all stock so i dont think they wouldve messed with it. well stock excluding the cut springs...
but im gonna pull the solenoid and clean the screen...what should i clean it with? brake cleaner maybe?
oh yeah its not engaging...i can tell lol

Re: someone tell me what i got
well...i cant find my 10mm wrench and i cant get my socket on the third bolt on the bottom of the solenoid...so i guess ill have to wait till i find or borrow a wrench
Re: someone tell me what i got
update:
puled the solenoid the screen is as clean as a whistle. i sprayed it with brake cleaner just incase though. feels the same while driving. and today i let one of my friends (who used to be a tech at the honda dealership) drive it and he said it doesnt engage.
as for checking if its getting the signal from the ecu, how do you guys recomend doing that? i thought a multimeter maybe but i cant hold the multimeter on the solenoid while i drive to 4500 or whatever rpm it is lol. suggestions?

or get the tires off the ground...(if that would allow enough load)
Re: someone tell me what i got
maybe its because its a stock SOHC??? you wont feel much if anything at all and with a stock intake and exhaust you wont hear anything as well, also EX's in canada came with d16y7's only
check the motor stamp d16y7 = sohc non-vtec / d16y8 = sohc vtec
but that is the vtec solenoid so my money is on its working but it being a sohc you wont feel a thing
if it wasnt working you would have a CEL.

Re: someone tell me what i got
My valve cover only says honda to..I agree that the V-tech is kicking in but you can't really tell..No code means its safe to asume that its working.. Do you have an Auto or Manual tranny?
Re: someone tell me what i got
92-95 civics that came with vtec motors, d16z6 have vtec on the valve cover 96-00 d16y8's only say honda except for canadian acura 1.6 EL's they also say vtec
