Question high rpms at normal highway speeds

My son just purchased a 2005 Honda Civic Si that had a transmission issue. A bearing kit and new clutch were replaced. Being that we did not drive the car prior to purchasing it we were unaware of the rpm's in relation to speed of this car. When we finally drove it yesterday after the repairs, in 5th gear at 60 mph/100kms the car s rpms were 3000. At 75 mph/120kms 3800 rpms (and pretty poor fuel economy). I have not spoke to the transmission shop yet but was there something that they may have done or not done? Or is this normal for the Si model or the specific tranny in this one. I am a previous Honda civic owner and have never had this high rpms at these speeds with my previous Civic's or Accords.

Re: high rpms at normal highway speeds

Wow, sounds like someone did a gear swap almost... Its a 5 speed manual transmission, in which case a solenoid inside the transmission is possibly faulty.

Honda Civic Si 2002-2005 5 speed--- Honda transmissions come in various gear ratios...

Re: high rpms at normal highway speeds

Those Rpms are about right, you got poor fuel economy because you were going 120km/h and efficiency dramatically reduces above 100km/h.

Also, your son does not own an 8th or 9th gen civic and this is not an article, it's a question. Please take the time to determine the appropriate forum in the future.

Re: high rpms at normal highway speeds

You are right it is the last year of the 7th generation That was my fault first time too the site and didn't realize how defined the site was. 18 litres for 100 kms seemed a little high for a honda even at 120 km/h.

Re: high rpms at normal highway speeds

The rpms aren't far off, but 18L for 100km is to low, even at 120km/h. Is maintenance otherwise up to date?

(if my mentioning that you posted in the wrong forum, not my intention, moving threads gets old fast)

Re: high rpms at normal highway speeds

The seller claims to have did all the required maintenance and plugs wires changes only a few 1000 kms ago. I'll be doing that myself later this week. And I do apologize about being in the wrong generation of Honda's

This would be a bit concerning, plug wire changes aren't a major concern on the d17 engine, because of the coil over spark design. I'd be willing to bet that the seller, like most sellers, was trying to make the car sound good and is lagging behind on maintenance.

Here's a good thread, it covers doing a tune up very well.

Re: high rpms at normal highway speeds

is this a usa SI or canadian SI? d17 motor or k20 motor. the hi revs are pretty normal for any civic at those speeds.

Re: high rpms at normal highway speeds

My 2005 EX runs at 3k doing 60mph, almost 4k doing 80mph. I have a 5 speed MT. These motors don't mind higher revs, I actually like being able to pull out and pass people without having to down shift.

It's just Honda's way of giving the car a bit more pep at the expense of MPG.

Re: high rpms at normal highway speeds

my 02 auto ex runs right at 3k rpms going close to 70mph. the gearing is different on the autos being they are only 4 speed. the autos get much better gas mileage under 3k rpms. 65-68mph is the most i usually go to save gas, and keeps the rpm around 2850.

The EX/CDM Si transmission also has shorter first and fifth gears than lower model d17 manual transmissions, so that rpms are definitely consistent. Poor gas mileage above 120km/h is partially about gearing and engine load, but a lot of it has to do with the way the car moves through the air at those speeds. Hence why I can still maintain exceptional gas mileage at those speeds if I draft I semi.

Re: high rpms at normal highway speeds

^^ I still get 33mpg at those speeds- with the A/C on. No drafting needed. 2001 EX coupe with 192K miles
