Transmission slipping, worth fixing or not?
Transmission slipping, worth fixing or not?
01 Civic LX, bought used this summer. 176K miles (shoulda known better I know)
Engine, exterior and interior all on good shape. AAMCO wants 1500 to tear it down and another ??? to fix it.
Anyone know what it would be worth to someone with the mechanical skills o fix it? I already have $5K in it and am just looking to escape and cut my losses.
Do Tech Schools work on trannys for less? Would that even be wise?
The car is for a college age daughter who has to drive it 200 miles each way to school. Cant take the chance on having her keep it (my opinion)

Re: Transmission slipping, worth fixing or not?
while slipping isnt good, it also doesnt mean the trans is about to die. i've driven over 50k miles with the trans slipping and its still going. i wouldnt fix it if the car still drives. rebuilds are almost always less reliable than the original. after spending $2-5k depending on the shop, it wont last more than a year before it breaks again. rebuilding a trans is a huge job and most mechanics have no clue how to do it properly. there is also a rebuild kit made by TCI which has upgraded parts to replace the defective honda parts. otherwise you are back to the same problem.
