timing belt

my service mechanic over at my local honda dealer said that my timing belt is dry, cracked, and very old. i got my 2003 honda civic at the beginning of june. it has roughly 110,000 miles on it right now. when i bought the car, it has around 107000 miles on it. should i consider changing it? because ive heard people had never have to change their timing belts.

Re: timing belt

If the timing belt is dry, cracked and old it should be changed immediately. If it snaps you'll have a $1500+ repair bill.

That's a no brainer bud. It should be changed ASAP. I don't know where you heard people never have to change their timing belts, but that is about as false as false can get. Timing chains maybe, but not timing belts.

Re: timing belt

maybe he means timing chains, which have a much longer life. belts have a max recommended life of 110k miles for 01+ civic. shorter if the weather is very cold or very hot.
