Is my neighbours trans slipping?
Is my neighbours trans slipping?
How exactly do you tell if a tranny is slipping? My neighbours, hes watching it close but he cant tell if its slipping or not.
He never drives the car past 3500rpm and and today i went on a test drive with him. From what we notice, it will happen on certain specific roads literally all the time cause we would drive the same road several times over and over and get the same shifting results. Theyre not even hills, they go up a slight bit but not much.
If hes gasing it from a stop and keeping a light but steady pressure to the gas....is it normal for each shift to shift at different RPMs even if he has pretty much the same pressure on the gas? Meaning it doesnt increase.
Example, the first shift will be at 2500rpm and 2nd at say 3000rpm.
We cant tell if its normal or what. He doesnt get this all the time but like i said we cant tell if its just the car accelerating on those specific roads or what.
Are there any other best ways to test? Is there any way to hear slipping? There was too much road noise so we couldnt focus on it. But when it slips does it have a certain very noticable sound?
i know when it slips the red indicator on the RPM gauge will travel (speed up) faster than when it isnt slipping right? Cause his doesnt do this. Say his first shift is at 2500rpm, then his 2nd shift will be at 3000rpm. The red indicicator on the gauage will move up at the same speed throughout. If it does speed up a bit faster at say 2500rpm its very very light.
I dont know maybe send me a vid if you can find one of an example of slipping, i might have to take a video of it would that help?
this is what i found so far of another youtuber

Ill take a video to compare for you guys

Re: Is my neighbours trans slipping?
You've been here long enough to know the DIY forums are not the correct place for this thread, I moved it to mechanical problems.
Put your neighbor's trans in neutral and rev the engine, pay careful attention to the sound and tachometer. Now, when your driving watch and listen for a similar sound or behaviour of the tach.

Re: Is my neighbours trans slipping?
ill we'll that thanks.
Here is 2 videos he sent me. One in the box, other in the link. Make sure you turn up the volume on your speakers first! Both were on that very same street, one of the streets where he gets the 3000rpm shift. He circled it like 5 times just now lol.

Re: Is my neighbours trans slipping?
ofcourse any trans will shift differently based on road conditions. it will shift into higher gears faster on a flat road vs hilly. thats not what slipping means. slipping is an rpm rev just before the shift occurs that feels like you bumped the shifter into neutral for a second.

1st video - 11-13secs
2nd video - 10-14secs
Is that slip or normal sound? I find just move the cursor to the starting time point and reclick to watch it over and over to get a close up look.

^+1
Your accelerating really slow, if you want to test for slippage go to the bottom of a hill and floor it. It looks like the tach bumped up a little bit between 2nd and 3rd gear, but very minimally so my initial impression is that the trans is in good shape.

Re: Is my neighbours trans slipping?
you should be able to notice slipping even with mild acceleration. mine does it when shifting at 2800rpm.
Re: Is my neighbours trans slipping?
Alrught ill tell him to do this. It could just be me but i find these cars shift smoother when gased harde vs easing it in.

Re: Is my neighbours trans slipping?
slipping is caused by a mechanical problem in the trans. its not normal if the trans is in good working order.
Re: Is my neighbours trans slipping?
I find on these trans that they shift better/smoother when gased heavier into each shift.

Re: Is my neighbours trans slipping?
doesnt matter how you accelerate, the clutches dont grab properly or the seals are leaking inside so there is not enough pressure.
Re: Is my neighbours trans slipping?
well got new video from this morning. Take a look everyone. The hill he went on is a pretty steep hill too. He actually stops in the middle of the hill and does it again 2nd time. Dont mind his talking, he likes to talk to himself alot.
From what we notice, when you go up a hill the gears shift at much later speeds. Like in his video, it doesnt do the 2nd shift till around the 55km mark.

Re: Is my neighbours trans slipping?
Honestly...I couldn't detect even the slightest bit of slippage in that video. Your rev's didn't jump at all in between the gears, it sounded pretty smooth, too. It's just my opinion, but, I think your neighbor is just a little paranoid.
Re: Is my neighbours trans slipping?
Indeed. I didn't see any slipping in that video either.
The Civic transmission has a screwy shifting pattern called "grade logic". It might hold a lower gear longer than you'd like, or be reluctant to shift on an incline/decline, and aggressively downshifts when braking. It depends on throttle position and other factors, but it's annoying as hell. Also the torque lockup can happen and it feels like another shift.

^ Ya I agree its smooth from that video this morning but the video i posted yesterday, in the 12-14sec frames is that slipping? You hear like that extended roar after the first one.

Re: Is my neighbours trans slipping?
yeah open up the trans and look at them. usually you can tell that they look shrunken or cracked. also the trans can slip when cold due to cracked seals that later close up when warm. but slipping is also caused by too little clutch friction material on the discs. so its hard to tell without doing a rebuild.
