newbie 98 civic ex do not want vtec

I am very new to civic. I was givin a 98 civic ex 5 speed with a hole in the motor. I need to replace the engine but do not want to put a vtec back in. I do not want this car for speed. I would like to put just a "regular" motor in it as it is cheaper. withthat said can I replace engine with a non vtec engine I would have a shop do it for me.If I could is it just plug and play. Also what are some good sites to shop for used engines. Thanks guys

Re: newbie 98 civic ex do not want vtec

To put a non-VTEC in there and run right you need the engine, wiring harness, and ECU. Just put in a VTEC, if you don't get on it then the VTEC won't engage anyways (it only engages when in wide-open-throttle @ 3000 rpm). You'll still get really good MPG's. Example: I had a road trip this weekend and went 332 miles on 10 gallons @75-80 mph when I was on the highway with the A/C on the whole way back.

The shop you choose should be able to get an engine for you and put it in for $1500-2000. That being said, there is almost always a "Honda guy" in town who will do it way cheaper. Example: The local Autozone manager is a Civic guy and has all the tools and loves to help ya as long as you provide the beer and smoke. Or the tuner shop in Garland that will swap with same-day service for $300 if you provide the engine. Basically what I'm saying is to get involved with the local Honda guys. Try the local forums here: http://www.honda-tech.com/

For a salvage engine search by zip here: http://www.car-part.com/ Or search local CL for a good deal. $500-700 is average price for a salvage with decent miles. Good luck.

be sure to get a D-series engine.

Re: newbie 98 civic ex do not want vtec

Thanks for the info. After some reading I have decided to put a vtec back in it. However I am confused about engines. I see that it comes with the D16y8.I can not seem to find one of these. Ive heard about JDM and am very interested. Am I correct in that a D15B will be a direct plug and play.I will post in new thread. Thanks fellas

Re: newbie 98 civic ex do not want vtec

Only plug and play would be a D16Y8 from '96-'00 EX's and D16Z6 from the '92-'95 EX's
