02 Civic LX with bad engine knock... VIDEO
02 Civic LX with bad engine knock... VIDEO
Morning,
I have had a problem that has progressively gotten worse over the past few months, which sounds like a bolt rattling around inside my driver's side cylinder when I hold the revs around 2500-4000 rpm.
I took a video with some sound of the knocking, so please have a look/listen at the link --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R29FfWdry-Q
No problems with car day to day, but this sound is getting louder and if it's something like a bearing or valve I want to deal with it before it blows up. All comments welcome, except "Take it to Honda!". I would love to, but I'm poor.
Thanks.

Sounds like the timing belt tensioner going bad. Maybe the water pump. You definitely need a valve adjustment, they're chattering pretty bad.

Alright. I replaced the timing belt about 6 months ago, say about 10,000 km ago. Didn't replace tensioner at that point, but i did replace the water pump. Thanks for the input.
Anybody else experience this with their D17?

I'm wondering if it isn't a valve adjustment thats needed, as the sound is only there when holding revs, but not on or off the throttle. If it was a vale problem, I would expect to hear the sound all the time.
I'm thinking it may be the rod bearing in my driver's side cylinder. A friendof a friend had one of his explode in a 240sx a few weeks back only it was alot louder before it finally seized. It blew through the side of the block, and I hope not to do this... anytime soon.... intentionally.
Any way to test if it is indeed a rod bearing without a complete engine teardown? Other things to look for if it is rod knock? Sounds like abolt bouncing around inside the combustion chamber when holding revs...
Thanks for the input guys, all are good points.
@Kennykid2002 - kink in breather hose cause thats the only piece i had to use and it was slightly short... not a big deal, its mostly un-pinched, just stretched. Good eye, tho

another guy just listened to the engine (with me at the car) and he figures it's probably piston slap or a rod bearing going. as the engine has 330,000km on it, hes probably right.
Prices for used D17A2 engines? $750-$1000?
