Question Stiff/Squeaky Gear Shift

I am having a problem with my 2001 EX coupe, the gear shift is suddenly much harder to shift, it feels very stiff and makes a creaking/squeaky noise when changing gears. I originally thought this might be due to the cold weather but even after warming up the problem persists. I have had no other previous problems with the transmission. I took it to a transmission shop but they want $500 just to inspect it. I hope it is just a simple lubrication issue. Any input?

http://www.hondapartscheap.com/south...t=0&quantity=0 Pull the center console off and you'll be looking at this (except for the front part, it's on the tranny. lol). Try greasing the pins, if they're worn replace them. If that doesn't work it's either the cable (#7) or the shifter (#1).

Re: Stiff/Squeaky Gear Shift

Update: I removed the console as suggested, and used white lithium grease on the pins and cables. The main culprit appeared to be the shift "ball" which I greased as well. Thus far problem solved; the squeaking is completely gone and the car shifts like new. Thanks for your help!

Which parts exactly did you grease that took away the problem?

Re: Stiff/Squeaky Gear Shift

With the console removed, I greased the cables running to and from the shifter. What made the most difference was lubricating the plastic "ball" that the shift lever comes out of. It is actually separated into two parts and this part was causing the noise and stiff shifting. I used the lithium grease and ran the car through all the gears several times before reapplying. Two weeks later and it still shifts like new with no noise.

Re: Stiff/Squeaky Gear Shift

I did the same thing 2 days ago- but I only pulled the console and greased the ball jamming a decent amount of grease in the crack of the ball and all around it. Also greased the pins that hold the shifter cables as well, but it wasnt needed. It was night and day. I think the shifter is better then it was when I first got my car used at 60k.
