92 civic converter

can my 1992 civic 1.5 run without a catalytic converter? i disconnected the whole cat back and it ran like it had no power is some back pressure needed? i seen a 2000 civic with no cat running fine. help. wanting to free up little bit of fuel economy

well yes it can run without a cat, but your exhaust will be very dirty. and yes you need an exhaust pipe setup. even if you dont have cat, you need to have the piping and a muffler. another way is to hollow out the cat you have, which is basically like using a straight pipe. and it will bolt back into place without any custom work.

it will be very noisy, and without back pressure your low end power will not be good. these small motors need some restrictions in the exhaust to run properly. there are cars getting 50+ mpg with one or even two cats, so i dont think that has any effect on gas usage unless yours is clogged.
