air turbulance under hood if add new vents???

air turbulance under hood if add new vents???

I don't exactly have a degree in astro physics or a thesis in particle theory, but, wouldn't adding new holes/vents/ram air hood to the engine bay cause tons and tons of air turbulance?

To my understanding, air comes in through the front fascia , from both the top and bottom grilles. Most of it hits the radiator, and whatever else is swirling around under the hood. Where does it exit? Well, we have two FRICKEN holes in either side of the wheel wells. I'm assuming Honda engineers have reduced the air turbulance in a stock engine bay to decent levels, so what about adding new vents????

So, having a:

1) ram air hood/hood scoop. (or any other FORWARD-facing vent) Assume one that looks similar to the Celica's.... That means a bit of air will come in and come straight DOWN on the top of the engine, directly above the spark plugs (well, the cover thingy... mine's cheap black plastic) That'll disperse in all directions, probably causing more rattle than you already have in your Civic. (The Subaru hood scoop directs air directly onto the radiator which is right below the scoop. I have no idea where/how the Celica hood scoop puts the air onto.)

2) side vents (M3?) That'll probably cause some noise due to turbulance, but hopefully nothing too bad.... I suppose since it's facing away from the direction of wind, it'd be ok since it would be taking hot air away.....

3) "idle" vent (i.e. either flat vents like on a Subaru hood, aside from the hood scoop), or vents in the opposite direction of travel. (I think there's a big azz hood called the Monster hood for 6th gens? It has a big DIP in the hood near the front.) I dunno....

What's your take on this? I always thought a nice "flat" hood scoop like the Celica ('built-in' to the hood, and not sticking out like a fricken Shaker hood, or even a Subaru, which puffs out a bit too much for my tastes; at least on a Civic) would look decent on a Cvic. I've never really seen a Monster hood-like hood in person before, so I dunno.

air turbulance around the engine bay isnt bad, only when it is turbulant inside the intake tube, and your filter will emiminate most of that. adding hood vents keeps the hot air from pooling around the engine bay and cools it down.

I think the holes in the sides of our car are meant for clearing the steering mechanism (whatever the hell those rods are called) and as a crumple zone. That's all they're meant for. The air that goes through the front of the car and hits the radiator is just expelled around the car and into the engine bay and around the engine and back out the bottom or the sides. It doesn't matter much anyway. Any kind of hood scoop doesn't do anything unless there's an intake sitting behind it or a radiator sitting behind it. Anything else is rice IMO.

correct me if im wrong, but isnt the scoop in the subaru to cool the intercooler???

anyway, grey is right if you're not using the scoop you should fire up some uncle bens... Thats why mustangs are rice from the factory, go try to see through their hood... its solid just for looks

Correctamundo! There's an intercooler under the hood scoop of a WRX for example. Front mounted intercoolers are more effective though.

Correctamundo! There's an intercooler under the hood scoop of a WRX for example. Front mounted intercoolers are more effective though.

Oh....yeah, that's it....the intercooler [IMG]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/IMG] I remember seeing some radiator-like thing on TOP of the engine, then immediately thought of it as the radiator...

Question about intercooler (off subject, but ah well.)
- Doesn't it function just like a radiator? It looks like a radiator, with all the fins and stuff.
- If it's front mount, doesn't it block the radiator???

Yes, it'll block the radiator, but there should still be enough airflow to allow the radiator to cool down. With my Tsunami bumper I noticed that my engine temperature dropped significantly since it allows more air to flow over the radiator. As for function, a radiator has fluid flowing through it while an intercooler has air flowing through it. They both use those fins to create as large a surface area as possible to radiate away all the heat.
