Gas Mileage Too Good To Be True???
Gas Mileage Too Good To Be True???
I recently acquired an unmolested 1994 Civic DX Coupe (5sp MT) that has been dealer maintained since new. After oil change, checking tire pressures, etc, I began driving (very conservatively, mostly highway) and covered 305 miles with 5.7 gallons of regular gas. That equates to over 53mpg, which seems totally impossible. I was hoping to see something between 35 and 40mpg, but this just seems too good to be true. I recently replaced the VSS and have had the speedo/odo drop to zero temporarily, while in motion a couple of times, but any unrecorded mileage from that would have reduced my mpg. Any ideas on what might be going on? I always fill up at the same station in the same way, so this is not a technique problem. What is the best mpg anyone has seen from this model? I suppose time and additional fill ups will tell, but I'm just wondering what mpg folks have seen from the 5sp 94 DX Coupe in the real world.

well the dx generally has the best mpg since its the lightest and doesnt have any major accessories. 53mpg is on the high side, but possible if you were doing around 55 mph mostly highway miles. or it could be the odo is not properly measuring mileage. you should drive a known stretch of road and see what its doing.

Thanks for the reply. I plan to replace the instrument cluster soon anyway (tried the VSS first) so I'll see what happens after that. I guess it's like anything else, if it seems to good to be true...

I would get on the Highway and drive Mile marker to mile marker and make sure the Odometer is accurate. I would also put a GPS in the car and compare your speedo. Lastly, I would fill the car to the brim, then when you fill up again, go to the brim. That way you know there is exactly the same amount of fuel in the car.
Only way to be sure you are accurate.

All good suggestions. I completely agree. So what kind of mpg should I expect to see from easy highway driving...35-40? Anyone know if I change my instrument cluster, can I roll the mileage up to match what I already have on the car? Can the odometer be swapped between instrument clusters to maintain the current mileage?
Re: Gas Mileage Too Good To Be True???
I had something similar happen to me. I'm fairly certain my '92 Civic LX normally gets around 39-40 mpg. I drive the same route to work and back everyday. I know it's 26 miles each way. I decided to check it the other day. I put just over 51 miles on the odometer and put .8 gallons in the tank. I filled it up until it was nearly overflowing the tank.
Re: Gas Mileage Too Good To Be True???
That sounds awesome. I have a 94 lx and I think the best I ever got was 45mpg. On average I think I get about 38-40, on highway. City even when it's super crappy, I've still gotten about 30-35mpg.
