Somethings Fishy
Somethings Fishy
Long story short, my mother owns an '06 Civic with 60k. Needed brakes. Done by local shop. One day (~150mi.) later hub side of an axle shaft strips while backing out of a parking spot with the wheel cut. As far as i know and can see in pictures the rotor is not a one piece hub so there shouldn't be any reason that the axle nut should have been touched. Does this car have a bad history with lifts? Axles don't just go as far as i know. Any similar experiences or recall info would save a pump jockey's life.

Only reason you they should have touched the axle nut is if they had to pull the knuckle. That doesnt say that they didnt take the axle nut off tho... Maybe someone at the shop thought it was cool to use the air tools to take off that nut- I think its fun when you do it with the air tools, lol.. but seriously. If it came off the day after you had that brake serviced then they probably ****ed with it, and if not... they should have caught it in their inspection. I'd call them up and pretend your a new customer scoping shops, and record the conversation... ask if they do an inspection of the wheel components and the brakes after a brake job. Then call back and state your problem. If they refuse, play them the phone convo.... you then have evidence.

TRIZ, the best part is that they said they "thoroughly inspect the wheel components". Does this car have alignment screws that attach the rotor to the hub? My best guess is the guy couldn't get the rotor off and pulled the nut, then realized he didn't pull the screws and forgot about the nut.

Yeah, there are two screws that hold the rotor to the kuckle, they are a paint in the *** to get out and impossible to without having an impact screwdriver. They are usually rusted. They arent needed though because the rim holds the rotor to the knuckle via the lug nuts.
So now you come back at them and tell them what happened. Ask them if they can fix it for you, and if they refuse play them the tape you made of the conversation and bring up the issue of negligence. Straight business law. I can scan a few pages from my old txt book for ya if they still refuse.
