f0ck! blown engine
f0ck! blown engine
so its done. mechanic says he cant figure out why it blew. we had replaced the thermostat a few weeks before and it was running perfectly. then one really cold day i couldnt get it to cool down. i stopped a few times. but once i was on the interstate it blew.
yeah yeah im an idiot. get that out of the away i deserve a little flaming.
anyway. the mechanic said im lookin at around 600-800 for a used engine with 100k. he also thought replacing the radiator would be a good idea. the mechanic showed me that something in the radiator had gummed to the cap. asked if i had used anything to fill the holes. which i havent. but it may be in there.
he also said it was almost empty on oil, which it shouldnt have been. im always right on top of it. when i asked if it had spilled out when it blew he said he didnt see any under neath the car.
so i guess my question is, is the amount he's estimating for an engine a good amount? and how long should this job take him? he said about 16 hours. is there anything else that isnt obvious to check out before we start sticking new parts into the car?
thanks ahead of time.

most expensive d17 ive seen is around $600. not sure on labor, maybe you should consider paying some more for k20a3 since youre paying all that labor. prolly at least 1500 for the labor.

Re: f0ck! blown engine
Dude, they have d17's on ebay for like 1000 shipped with only 30k on them! It's worth spending an extra 2 or 3 hundred dollars for 70k less on the engine! And if your swapping, just make sure you get a full swap, like motor mounts, ecu, suspension components, and other things. If ya do your research there are tons of kits out there that gaurantee everything for a full swap. If ya got the money, a swap is the way to go for sure!
Re: f0ck! blown engine
so a quick update:
i got a d17 put in my car, with new belts, radiator, and a few other things. since ive picked it up, it hasnt idled right at all. sometimes as low as 900rpm upto 2.5k. it wont do this at first, it will idle fine. but after driving the idle is way off. only with the clutch in, or in neutral, i can watch the tach bounce and bounce.
after awhile it throws an engine light. the bouncing settles down some, but its still a good 1000rpm up and down constantly. after the engine light flips, the accelerator starts acting funny. whenever i let off the gas, the car shudders hard.
its been to the shop 3 times in 3 weeks, he has replaced all the sensors, and tried some other diagnostics to no luck. his only recommendation is going to the dealer, who is a punk/bitch (his words). he wouldnt send me if he couldnt fix it.
not sure wut to do from here, so im asking you guys. ive seen a couple threads about engine swaps and people having issues with the ecu after a swap. can someone explain these issues to me aswell? maybe this is something i can bring to my mechanics attention before i go to a stealership.
th(c)x!
edit: on the optimistic side. the engine runs perfectly, and the temp is running nominal!
