Unhappy Slightly suspension retarded

I posted this earlier on the general suspension forums, but figured I'd bring it to the 7th Gen forums for a few more opinions

I am kinda retarded as far as suspension terminology goes. The most I know, I guess, is what a spring is..

Im not sure the difference between coilovers and shocks+springs.. but all I know is my '02 Civic needs a new set of it all, since it's still riding old stock suspension.

This is my '02 Civic.. I've been avid on the site trying to find some info one what kinda suspension to buy, however, I haven't found any break down as to what's what, and what does what.. Ultimately I want a smooth ride, as I dont do too much racing, because right now I feel every pebble on the road, and there's also a loud clunk whenever I dip into a pot hole or slowly go over a speed bump.

Any posts as to what kinda setup I should be looking at would be helpful.

Re: Slightly suspension retarded

coilover is a spring and shock together as one piece. alot of them have adjustability. spring and separate skocks are usually fixed drop. and you need a camber kit no matter what you decide on. usually people here who get separate shocks and spring go for tokico hp blue shock and some sort of spring like eibach, tein, etc depending how low you want it. tokico are rated for max 1.5 inch drop.

Re: Slightly suspension retarded

So Tokico Blue shocks and say Eibach springs would be a smooth setup? As I said previously, my preference would be directed more to a smoother ride than a tighter racing setup.

Also, would there be any sub-categories of Eibach springs and Tokico Blue shocks?

Last, what kinda Camber kits are out there, and whats the difference from one to another?

Tip Of the Day: where the road is rocky n bumpy do not SPEED.. go slow... or you will also be in the market for a new Oil Pan ... as for the camber kit... they all pretty much the same... you can have your tires set up with the camber u want!

Re: Slightly suspension retarded

Okay.. so I'm down to my last question..

If I were to buy coilovers over springs/shocks.. whats the cost in repairs if something should go wrong? Is it financially smarter to buy springs/shocks, seeing as if the spring goes you can simply replace the spring?

Well, I lied.. last last question.. if my ride is getting really stiff and I wanted it smoother, would it be 'okay' to simply replace the springs? or would I replace the dampers/shocks in this case?

I'm not really under a budget, however I'm not looking to splurge, either..

Thanks for all your replies

Re: Slightly suspension retarded

you want new shock and spring. you can keep stock spring but not recommended. eibach makes prokit (1 inch drop) or sportline (around 1.5 inch). and tein makes s-tech spring (around 1.5). just search around. SPC makes good front and rear camber kits.

Re: Slightly suspension retarded

Bone, ty for clearing the confusion on that one.

Gear, thank you for the generous listing of springs/shocks, but what would your suggestion be of coilovers, if, of course, you would go with coilovers.

I was looking into the Dezod KW V1 Coilovers with adjustable height (as it was mentioned all coilovers are adjustable). They seem to have recieved good reviews and an amazing price at 1.3k shipping included.

If you have any preferences to a specific coilover, or if you're still adamant in the shock/spring direction, or if you know anything bad concerning the KWs, tell me.

Re: Slightly suspension retarded

Of course I did. From what I got of it, I found regardless of what I get it's ideal (coilovers) and required (shocks/springs) to get a camber kit. My brain couldnt grasp much more than that, I guess.. lol

Re: Slightly suspension retarded

But if ur wanting a smoother ride and do not race u want to go with shocks and springs, as coilovers are stiffer...

There is no ideal. There is only what works for your intended application.

Street use
- Easy = Megan racing, Tein Basics
- Good set up = Tokico blues and eibach prokit

Good
- Easy = Tein SS
- Slightly better set up = Konis and Eibach sportlines

Better/race
- Konis/GCs
- Bilsteins/GCs
