Civic LX Shifter ****

I got a 96 Civic LX 4 door and im plannin on getting a new shifter ****. I was just wondering..How do you take out the shifter ****? I know its probably a stupid question but its my first car and i want to know. If anyone can help thats would be great!

I've got an 04, but I would imagine it should be about the same though. Pull down the metal/plastic ring connecting the **** to the boot and then the **** should twist off (internally-threaded)

I dont think its the same because ive pulled the boot down n tried twinsting it but it just isnt turning. Either its defferent or im just not twinsting hard enough. I herd it was different but im trying to figure out.

Only info I can find is that there is either a hex screw holding it on, which when you pull down the boot you will see, or it will thread on. REP me!
If you still don't figure it out, get a chilton manual or read the owners manual possibly, or get a haynes manual.
