'92 sedan brake issues
I've been working on my dad's 92 DX sedan (manual)...it started a few days ago when he decided to have me change his front pads and rotors because they were warped...I picked up some good ones from Advance and installed them along with bleeding all 4 as a maintenance thing...16 y/o brake fluid isn't that great.
So, we both try it out, and the pedal goes to the floor. They seem to be working ok but the pedal travel is just really long. Both of us have bled the lines on a dozen or so different times on various vehicle so you know
...we know what we're going as far as that goes. So I figure I may have air in the lines somewhere, so we bleed it again, starting at the pass. rear, driver's rear, pass front, driver's front...no change.
We then figure that perhaps the master cylinder went bad at the same time. He hasn't owned the car very long but the master appears to be pretty fresh. At any rate we get another from Advance, bench bleed, install, and bleed all the lines again...this time, it seems that the pedal will go to the floor when you initially pump it, but after that it will be fine. After not pressing the brake for about 20 seconds, the pedal will go to the floor again, but again, its fine after that first pump. Bled the lines again, no change.
After this we decide to take it to our local mechanic who's worked on this Civic and another twin before. He tried the old master cylinder of ours again, no change. He then figured to replace the vacuum booster drum thing... though now it seems that he thinks only the front brakes are working in addition to the 20 second issue. He messed with the car for 6 hours and he's an experienced, honest mechanic. He's proceeding to send it to a nearby shop that specializes in brake systems (and not charging us for the 6 hours, though my dad insists he receive a little for his time).
What do you guys think of this situation? Thanks.
