On a 5-speed, I always come out early and have the car roll back... today I did that coming out a parking lot and as I got out of reverse, I let off the clutch and didn't give it enough gas... the car eventually stalled and kept rolling back... then I started it (it was a LONG start... longest I've ever had... like a full 5 seconds, and yeah I had over 1/4 of gas in my tank... a lil' under 1/2) and I just gased it more and went on my way... there were some guys checkin out my car in the process as I killed it...

that's all right as long as you don't go too fast... it is just about using the compression of the engine. Big trucks and buses do a lot of that.

as long as you don't go too often oven 6000 rpm and you don't do it when your engine is still cold ;o)
or else, you'll end up beating your engine

This brings me back. I got into an accident around 3 years ago with my thunderbird, and the rental car company gave me a Ford Escort to use while mine was in the shop. Around 10:30 one night, I had just dropped one of my friends off at his house and was coming out of his driveway and I threw it into drive while still going out of it, and next thing I hear is a grinding sound and then the car wouldnt go anywhere. Anywho, we had it towed back to the rental car company and they didnt ask any questions, they just gave me another car like it was no big deal. The rental company called me around 3-4 weeks after it had happened and asked me if I had been "driving the car recklessly" because the gears inside the transmission were all stripped. I was kept saying things like of course not, and why would you accuse me of something like that, and sure enough a couple days later, I even got an apology letter from them for even asking me.

info: in a 5 speed you can roll back, shift into 1st, and go, this wont hurt your car at all....

in an auto YOU MUST STOP THE CAR... i repeat, DO NOT SHIFT FROM R to D WHEN ROLLING BACKWARDS STILL

you WILL hurt your transmission... I have seen a some autos shear entire shafts because of the shock to the transmission when doing this.

I hate it when my car won't go into R and I have to let off the clutch and push the clutch down again to get it in, that happened today. That happened on my 88 Civic a lot just rarely on my 01 but still just makes me wonder. I usually always come to a complete stop no matter what but I have occasionaly on the roll out of R to go to 1 st and go.

my poor '97 corolla and its 1.8 w/ auto tranny. I miss her so much! That poor car took such an abusing and just smiled back and asked for another! We're talking about 80 000 km <from 70 000 km to 150000 km> of stupid a$$ driving by me, i was young and stupid . I mean neutral drop after neutral drop after neutral drop, e-brake, break torquing, shifting it like a shifttronic, etc... I was such an idiot with that thing. But just like a toyota, that thing NEVER EVER had a problem, i ramed into a curb at about 20 km/h, HEAD on cuz it was covered by snow, except for a violent jump and bump, nothing, she didnt even need an allignment! When we traded it back to the dealership, it was such a bittersweet moment, sweet new car, two door, manual tranny, just like the one i learned on in driving school, but on the other hand farewell indestructible corolla that never let me down, i mean never, 180 km/h from here to st. catherines and back whole trip in 1 hr 42 mins on the clock, and she never complained.... THat why i love toyotas so much, i know the abuse they can take! Where does this tie into this thread, no where really, but whenever i did shift the car from reverse to drive without being fully stopped, and i did it all teh time, it would sort bunnyhop for a split second and I knew it was no good. I learned my lesson though, i will never treat a car so bad ever again, she was too good to me! Try 1/4 of that on any other ar and you in for it. PLease i havent done any stupid shiat in my civic, but i hear about the problems everyone else is having and i just shake me head.....

Definately stop the car before you shift into drive, and DONT NEUTRAL DROP, if thats ever crossed your mind

Filled on when I got my paycheck..added 61 liters of gas lol..First Cars..specially hand me downs are always indestructuble cars ...
