2005 Civic, worth it?
2005 Civic, worth it?
Hey all,
I have a 2005 SE and I am wanting to give it more power as I am growing quite attached to it. My problem is this, I went to one of the best tuner shops we have in this city and they told me that 01-05 Civics are garbage to tune and bloody expensive. He quoted me 14 thousand for a K20A2 swap (including labour). Although when I checked another tuner shop, they are selling the engine for 5.7 thousand including transmission and a bunch of other parts that are required for the swap. Essentially, the guy told me not to tune my Civic and to buy something else, but an S2000 driver I know told me to do a swap on my car because it'll end up better overall than going with an older car such as an RX-7 or something. I would like to know out of anyone that has done a K20A2 swap on this kind of Civic or at least knows about, how much does it end up costing and is my 2005 a bad tuning choice or is he just blowing steam?

Sizzearch first. LOTS of ppl have dont K20 swaps on the site.
What your local shop guys are probably saying is that modding the D17 is expensive, because where as an intake might give you 15hp to the wheels in another car, in ours it might give 5 at best. Yeah it sucks, but we still get madd gas mileage. Turbo people are knocking on the 500hp door, and NA ppl are well... just begining their journeys. Swapers have been making nice numbers too.
14 thousand is just your loser mechanic trying to make crazy money. Hell, you might want to think about coming over to the states to get the job done depending if your close enough to the boarder to make it worth wile. Check prices for sure.

i've read on here of people getting the labor and engine for a swap from anywhere between $5000 (friends helping friends) to $12k. somewhere in between is what it should be, all parts and labor included.

$12k is when k-swaps were rare.
i know the price of install on k-swaps have gone down. I think its around $1500 now and would take about a week. Still more expensive then a b-swap but its getting closer.
you can buy type S engines for around $4k now. I think the type R still go for $5500 though.
It is cheaper just to buy a faster car now. You can buy used 350z's, s2000's and rsx type S for around $16k now. You can upgade to evo's and sti's for closer to $20k.
