Manual Transmission issue
Manual Transmission issue
One of my Civics, a 2001 LX Coupe with 192,000 miles, is having some issues. Whenever I upshift the manual transmission from 2nd into 3rd gear at around 4,500 RPM, it grinds for a second even if the clutch pedal is fully depressed. It doesn't happen in any other gear and doesn't grind if I shift below 4,000 RPM. Since I live in an area where I need to get up to speed quickly (fast moving freeway traffic) I must shift at around 5,000-6,000 RPM if I want to get up to speed without getting ran over. Anyone know what might be causing this grinding noise as I shift into 3rd gear? It has no problems staying in 3rd gear, it just grinds for a second while shifting. Its been doing this for about 4 months and seems to be getting worse. Thanks for any help..

Re: Manual Transmission issue
Ok i had the same problem last month. I replaced my clutch kit. the problem was still there I changed the clutch kit but went away after driving easily for 3 days. There might something else but heres a common issue.
1) If u still have ur OEM clutch at 192k miles (which i dont think u do) Its time to get a new clutch kit. It might be because of ur Pressureplate going bad.
2) At 192k miles it could even be your synchros. Yes this is scary but its the least chances...
3) Ever knew manual transmissions also have tranny fluid ??? if u do ... change it and see if this takes care of the problem. if not go with step1 ... evn after that if u have the problem dont go for step 2 just get a used tranny from a junkyard !

Yea, it has the original clutch, but it's just happening in 3rd gear. I think you are right about the Syncros. I have driven this thing very hard, I am surprised it has lasted so long. Thanks for the reply.

Re: Manual Transmission issue
sorry to open this back up but i just recently been having this problem...it usually happens when i am racing and am at the top of 2nd at 7000 rpms and shifting to 3rd... i have a little over 57000 miles... does that mean its time for a new clutch? i think im going to try changing the tranny fluid 1st though.. and by shifting faster does that wear out your sychros more?? thats just something ive heard... but i dont know if its true..

Re: Manual Transmission issue
Its your synchros. My 3rd gear synchro was bad at around 90000 miles. It started grinding at around 5500 rpms and by 120000 miles it was grinding at 3000 rpm. If you baby the tranny or rev match while shifting you should be able to get a couple thousand miles out of it.
Shifting faster/harder IS worse for the synchros. These transmissions arent racing trannys so take it easy.

Nope, my grinding did the same thing. It will only get worse. Just take it easy with the shifting and stop beating the car and the tranny should last for a while.
