Help with auto shifting problems

I bought this car used about 2 months ago. Its a 95 EX wtih 168k and it had a shifting problem then where it wouldn’t shift until it reached high RPM’s and you had to let off the gas to let it upshift. It downshifted fine but on the hard side. We adjusted the throttle cable and everything was fine. A few weeks later we took a trip and it started to make a schreeching noise after we had driven around an area with a lot of turns and hills. Shortly after that…about a mile later the car wouldn’t move and we pulled off to the side. My b/f looked under hood and saw the little boot on the throttle cable had shoved itself into the throttle control lever. Once he pulled that back to where it should be the car was fine but once we got in stop and go traffic we’d hear the noise, RPM’s would go up and down while giving it the same amount of gas and it would stop moving. We’d pull off and adjust and we were good to go. We manage to get it back home ok and we ordered the shift cable and throttle cable figuring they were worn. We installed them this weekend, synchronized them and it shifted much better then it ever had but it still need a little adjusting as now it would shift at 3k for every gear except 1-2. We took it to a friends shop and he adjusted it a little more and it seemed fine. We drove it around a good bit last night and it seemed fine for me to drive to to work the next morning.

This morning I got about 3 miles from home after sitting in bumper to bumper, got on a major road to go to work and I noticed the engine revving but the car is barely moving so I pulled off, turned the car off, started it and it was fine. About 1 mile further it did it again so I pull off and decided to try and get home and switch cars. I managed to get home but had to pull off many times the 6 miles back. The car also quit on me twice going up a hill at a constant speed and at one point I was going 60 and the RPM’s dropped to below 1k.

I’m not sure what’s going on whether it just needs to be adjusted again or not but I wanted to post in here hoping someone can shed some light on this. We’re not familiar with Hondas at all as our main cars are the fbodies which my b/f and I work on alot.

TIA

Re: Help with auto shifting problems

almost sounds like transmission going out, and by playing with the cable you helped it shift but otherwise it seems like its slipping if it has to rev up before shifting. may also be a problem with the throttle body sensors, maybe the tps (throttle position sensor) is out of adjustment and thats why playing with the cable is affecting it.

Re: Help with auto shifting problems

Thanks for the reply. My b/f adjusted the cables again and it seemed fine but I told him to come to a stop and give it alot of gas because that's when I seem it will start the problem. Sure enough the screeching noise started and the car just revved and wouldnt move . I guess the tranmission is shot then ? Is the screeching maybe the tranny grinding?

Re: Help with auto shifting problems

yeah sounds like previous owner didn't take care of the transmission well. Good news is that used d16 tranny's are really cheap. You can buy another one for around $200.

Re: Help with auto shifting problems

Yeah it sucks it's shot but like you said good they arent expensive like they are in our fbodies... $1500! I saw a couple on ebay that I could drive and pick up so I might do that. At least my b/f can do all the work.

We have done alot of little things to the car since I bought it. The paint was in horrible condition but I could tell it had some beauty to it underneath. I bought a porter & cable 7424 polisher along with wetsanding to get rid of some orange peel in a couple areas. It's amazing how well it worked! Looks like I got it repainted . Got alot of the scratches out and some overspray that was on the hood. Not sure what the previous owner did but there was and is some odd things with it. Hood latch was broken, radio had been stolen (wires were cut), headlights were way out of alignment, and the list goes on.

I was planning a cam swap on the Trans Am and have just a couple things to buy but now I have to put it on hold to get the tranny
