HOLY CRAP! Never heard this noise from the trans before
Ok here's a good one,
my car, which I've narrowed down to be the transmission (explained later) is making a "whirrring" noise similar to the noise that an electrical motor makes when resistance it put on it. Kinda like a scraping/not lubed up sound almost?
I know it's the transmission because when I downshift it sound comes on even before I let the clutch back it, but If I let the clutch back in in neutral the sound immediately stops. Like this:
I'm driving in third gear and then I push down the clutch and apply the brake a little bit, as I remove the shifter from third and move it into the second gear position, clutch still completely down, the car makes the whining sound detailed above, which sounds bad. If I let the clutch it, the noise just get worse as the gear connects to the engine. However, If i remove the shifter from the second gear position and leave it in the middle/neutral the noise continues, BUT when I let the clutch in when the shifter is in neutral the noise stops immediately.
Anyone know what this is? What should I do about it? Thanks for all your help.
Ps, I captured a video of this sound in action on my cell phone, but don't know how to get it onto the internet, if anybody knows, please let me know! Thanks!

Sweet! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction....
But don't you think I have to replace the throwout bearing? because when I take my foot off the clutch pedal and let it it, the noise stops...so I think that's the throwout bearing. What do you think?

if you hear the noise now, it is the THROWOUT BEARING. If you release the clutch, the noise should go away

Re: HOLY CRAP! Never heard this noise from the trans before
I also just talked to my shop here, and they recommended I just replace the clutch assembly at the same time too because It has a lot of miles and he said "If you're going to get that far into it, you might as well replace the clutch too." Also explaining that "it could be the clutch too, getting worn out."
Do after market clutches come with these bearings or something?

Aftermarket clutches will come with a new through out bearing yes,
And if you let go of the pedal and the noise stops yes it is you’re through out bearing and not the input shaft bearing.
Good luck with your new clutch endeavor and your welcome!

Dont take the risk of leaving out the other bearing bro ... If its just $28 change both the bearings (i.e. the one that comes with the clutch and the $28 one) coz u definitely dont wanna drive home from the shop with the noise still there and then pay another heavy sum to get the other one fixed.
@ dude who said $350 - $500,
I feel lucky getting a qoute of $160 from a mechanic who doesnt own a shop but does work at ur premises
I should get it done asap i beleive

Sweet, thanks for the info. It helped a ton. Yeah I'm just going to get a new clutch and flywheel and both new bearings.

Ha ha, yeah seriously that would suck big time. I'm definately going to get both.
Maybe I should look around for another place to do it cheaper, maybe a transmission specialist. Although I trust this company, that's the biggest reason I keep going back to them.

Hm, I think I'll just get the aftermarket pieces. Although I don't want to charge it on my credit card, do you think this is something that should be done immediately? Or can I wait a while?

Re: HOLY CRAP! Never heard this noise from the trans before
Eventually it will "pop" out of 2nd and 3rd gear at high RPM's.
and the sincrows will be beyond repair.
And over a period of that it will eventually drop. (This is by far the worst case scenario) the sound gets so loud that you eventualy can hear it OVER the damn engine.
