Noob: A couple of quick questions
Noob: A couple of quick questions
I just purchased a 95 civic lx with 47K, it was previously owned by a 80 year old lady. I know this engine is no vtec, but i want to help it breathe and exhale easier. Will a combo of CAI with headers, high flow cat and a better muffler noticeably increase performance? Will this combo hurt or help my fuel economy? With an upgraded exhaust, is there a muffler that will help flow but not make to much noise? Because I don't want the car to make any noise. I also plan on upgrading the ignition system, full lube job and sensor replacement.

ok um first off...welcome to the site.. not to be a dick or anything but liek alot of people will tell you, theres a search button and you could probably find all of your answers there. as for ur question, CAI with headers and an "exhaust system" will increase performance. not by much but ull notice a difference. usually depending on the vehicle and what products form what compnies u get. if u want not that much noise, then why a high flow cat? im pretty sure any car ewith a high flow cat will be much louder. if u want performace, you cant just get a muffler. thatll just be noisy. look for "catback exhaust system", with an intake and exhaust i think gas milage does go up but not much at all.
Re: Noob: A couple of quick questions
What Kind of Tranny do you have? Because some people who have those models usually change their engine to a Integra Gsr engine. But if you aren't willing to go that drastic, intake, headers, high flow cat and exhaust will help the performance of the engine. The gas mileage will increase as long as you don't have the car floored every where you go. Also you can search, and you'll find ton's of treads with answers and recommendations. As for a quite exhaust i like my Apexi Ws2, it gave the car a noticeable performance gains while it remains very quite.

every single person i have met that got an intake/exhaust to help improve gas mileage has lost significant mileage. not bc its less efficient or anything, but bc you wanna hear the damn thing everywhere you go

No point in a high flow cat unless you go turbo or are making some rediculous amount of power. Save your money something else.

Re: Noob: A couple of quick questions
true, but that happens regardless of mods. ive once got 15mpg in the city when i was flooring it around for 50 miles. on these cars, once you get above 3k rpm and the vtec starts doing stuff, say goodbye to mileage. driving under 3k rpm with a light foot will make the gas last a very long time cause some valves dont even open.
Re: Noob: A couple of quick questions
you should just swap it man. even if you're not wanting to spend a lot of money on a swap, like a GSR swap or b16, you could get a b18 ls swap with everything you'd need for probably around 800 bucks or less, and your car would pull pretty hard.
Re: Noob: A couple of quick questions
and as far as gas mileage goes, i drive a k20a2 swapped em2 and I get 33-35mpg with mixed city and highway, and I really get on it at least 3-4 times a day.
Re: Noob: A couple of quick questions
Aftermarket intake and exhaust will make noise, some will make less than others, but they all will be louder than stock. You won't notice any difference in power either. An axle-back exhaust is the way to go if you're looking to keep the noise level down.
Why do you want to upgrade the ignition system btw? I'd just give it a tune up and be done with it.

Re: Noob: A couple of quick questions
I'm planning on just swapping heads for now. I have a z6 head with its original intake and tb. I have an aem short ram but, i haven't installed it yet. From what i heard and read they are not as good as a cai and they make a lot of noise. As far as my ignition, I'm just giving it a tuneup, I'm not talking about installing a msd 6 box. Since the car was previously owned by an old lady, I'm guessing she has never had the plugs, cap, rotor changed.
