Not even the dealership knows what's wrong
I'm new to this forum and really need some imput. I bought a 2003 Honda Civic in November with 41000 miles on it. It ran great until last week when the check engine light came on. Brought it to the dealership (still under warranty) and it came up with error code DTC P1298. Ok, they fixed that- on my way I go. As I'm driving home, the engine check light comes on again and the "D" indicator on the dashboard is blinking. She stalled when I got to my parking space. Called the dealership, brought her in on Monday. They test drive the car- everything is fine and no error codes found. Two days later, check engine light is back. Yesterday, dh drives the car and she stalls at a red light. Engine light is on and RPMs aren't registering. Temperature indicator is "C", but the hood is extremely hot and the "D" indicator went out. The car barely got to the dealership, she had no power at all. This morning I get a call, they test drove her again- (over 77 miles total and they say everything is fine. They offered to buy back the vehicle which I am considering. Has anyone encountered anything similiar? Should I just take the buyback and get a new car? Any suggestions?....thanks

Honestly, if the buyback price leaves you breaking even, I would go for it. This way you can avoid a further potential problem down the road when your warranty is out. If not, just be a pain in their *** until they fix it for good.

I don't know about breaking even. The car was financed. Trading it in would mean negative equity since the dealer pays the value of the car not the lein. I'm willing to go that way as I don't feel I will ever be comfortable with the car. As of now, she has 46000 miles on her. I barely put 5k miles on her since November. I'm thinking cut my losses now or end up with a Civic paperweight. I guess that's the risk you take buying a used car. Even if it is "certified pre-owned".

yeah, i'd make them take it back. if it's that much of a headache now, it's only going to get worse.

I would sell it back to them, but also including lenders fees also since you have not had the car for long. You should only have to pay the fees for only the time you had the car.
Although this particlar car was giving you problems, I would not completely give up on the Civic completely, they are very good cars. MAybe now might be a good opportunity to look into a new vehicle, possibly an '07 model or possibly Si
Good luck

Spend 75 bucks to get a new ecu and have the immobilizer programmed with your key. Yeah, its 75 bucks, but your sensors aren't all bad. I'm willing to bet money your ecu is just defective. Its a quick, relatively easy and affordable fix. If you're interested in going this route, give me a shout and I will walk you through the steps, its really not a huge deal at all.

Hubby and I decided to do the trade in. I was really pissed off that they couldn't find out what was wrong. The manager told me that its rare, but sometimes they have to get an engineer to diagnose the problem. Sorry, not worth the time and energy. Hubby felt the trans slipping going uphill and the check engine light was a quiet little reminder that this car wasn' going to work out. Right now, my budget is going to be the deciding factor. It all comes down to the green.

Thats the diagnostic code saying there is something severly wrong with the transmission. There are several long and short blinks the indicate the problem.
