head swap
head swap
Right now i have a 05 dx with a D17A1 and i just got a D17a2 head from my job and was thinking about puting the head on. I am woundering if any one has done this yet and if they had good results, just thinking about putting a head gasket to make a little compression.i know it is not going to be a race car but i just want alittle more out of it. I know K20A is the way to go i just don't have the money yet and i can get the parts for the head swap cheap from my job. Any advice is gladly taken.
Thanks
Thanks
its cool man ...k20 is really a pain in the wallet but just do what you can. i have an EX and i like beating old/slow cars with mine its an awesome feeling...its like taking candy from a baby lol. Have fun man. its the way to go

^^^ lol...
To Honda983, just think about it for a moment...At the end youre getting udpgrated to d17a2 and that is all.
Go to any honda dealership and ask them to testdrive Civic with d17a2 and this way you know what you're getting into before installing anything. If you like - go ahead, if you dont - sell a2 parts

I am thinking about doing the same thing, however there really isn't that much information on it out there... I believe there is a thread on here with someone who did it.. search for mini me swap or d17a2 and you should find it.
The advantages of the mini me is the obvious, vtec.. however there are some other differences between the a1 and a2, like compression ratios and gear lengths.. I've basically read that if you want to go boost sometime down the road, doing a mini me and keeping the a1 gear lengths/CR you will be better off than with an a2 boosted.
Also, don't forget that you can't just throw the head on and get vtec.. you will need a vafcII or something similar to control the vtec engagement.. then you will need a good tune.. after which you should be running a little better, not sure how much better, but a little...
For us a1's who don't have the money for a swap, this is a good investment.

i work at a honda dealer and thats how i am getting the head for free from a kid hhow hydrolocked his car. all i need is the head gasket (employee discount) and a vetc controller. a guy did it on here already i have not heard back but since it is so cheap i wanted to hear from people that have done it to see if it made a difference.
thanks for the advice

i've been there. its an improvement over the lx head. vtec is proven to make more power over non vtec motors. its all about what you want to do with it and how much power you want to make.
Well how much is the ECU from your work?
VFACII will run ya about $400 give or take a few bucks plus a tune depending on where you live will run ya about $100 to 200 bucks so maybe the ECU is the way to go.
But the VFACII does have it benefits to it as well. With the tune you may get up to 10 hp with it so ur gaining but you might wanna get a I/H/E to go along with it.
