easy to swap head units myself?
easy to swap head units myself?
I have an Aiwa head unit, but I want to swap it with a Pioneer head unit that I took off my old car. Circuit city had done the Aiwa install before, so the dash kit is already in there. For an electrical newbie like myself, would it be easy for me to swap out the head unit if I were to buy the right wire harnesses? Would everything just be plug & play or would I have to do some splicing? What would be involved?

no matter what you gotta do some splicing but its not hard at all, if you can see colors, read, and use a crimper (better to soilder SP? but not everyone can) then you are set
a pretty simple job. the cage is crimped in, easy to uncrimp and remove. the pioneer one is specific for pioneer, and will need to be installed.
that takes care of physical install, minus radio bezel removal, which can be found here in the DIY. short answer is once the two bolts that hold in the radio bezel from underneat are removed, it pops right out, easy.
the wiring is cake. if circuit city did their job right, youve got a wire harness in your car. its a set of wires with two plugs. one plug fits your stock harness, the other the aiwa radio. for you, its as simple as cutting that harness in half and splicing in the pioneer harness where the aiwa one was. the colors will match up perfectly.
easy peasy.

As a side note. When I installed my Pioneer head unit, instead of splicing the wires together I put male/female connectors on each wire incase I ever needed to remove the head unit all I had to do is remove the Pioneer harness from the connectors and install the new harness to the existing connectors. Just an idea I had for future expansion. You never know what will happen
