Timing Belt Q....

I have an 01 civic, it has 103000k on it and i have a big trip coming up (2000-2500k), I went to acura to buy my timing belt because i though u had to change it at 100000k. But the mechanic said that i dont have to change it untill 165000. Should i trust his word or is it a good ideah to change it???.

Thanx alot.

honda manual says replace at 110k miles for normal conditions and 60k miles for very high/very low temperatures. the mechanic can say whatever, but i'd go w/ the manual and be safe. i would change it.

you should be fine until 110k or more, but if you want to be on the safe side, replace it now along with the water pump, seals etc, all the timing belt components should be changed at once cuz its a pain in the *** to get to.. you dont want to just do the timing belt then later on down the road do through the same process to fix the water pump...

FYI I had sold my 01 civic with 103k miles, I ran 80 shots of nitrous, turbo kit for 5k miles then added another turbo kit for 10k+ miles and the car still ran g reat afterwards... either way, if the timing belt looks bad you should change it otherwise you should be fine for few thousands of miles..

I have a little over 70k...now...my girlfriends mom keeps insisting that toyota corollas are way better than civics because of the one fact that..."once you hit 75k the timing belt will go, and if it goes it will destroy your entire engine unlike the toyota which when the belt goes it doesnt touch the engine so it wont make your engine go" On the contrary...my friend has a civic, a 95...with over 200k miles on it, he barely does anything to it, only oil changes(hes not really into cars), and his runs just fine.
Is it true that hondas last FOREVER?
Anyway...is it true that if the belt goes it will destroy my engine?

Damn! I thought it was pretty much imports against domestics, but now people are saying Hondas are unreliable because they like toyotas? Hogwash!! Any engine can fail when a timing belt goes out, if the crank and camshaft start spinning at different rates it (reason for timing belt so they spin together at the right times) = catastrophic failure for the engine typical female just spitting **** she heard from the dealer or a mechanic "friend". I mean absolutely no offense to females that know their ****, but ya'll need to educate your less informed sisters. They are making fools of themselves

When timing belts go most people just sell their car. It is a very bad thing. Your engines moving parts hit other moving parts. Then the moving parts can bend and damage non moving parts.

most toyota comuter cars use non-interferance head designs so if the timing belt breaks the valves dont hit the pistons. that being said, its not like that happens all the time. you need to do some serious maitainance ignoring to break a timing belt in a stock or lightly modified honda. And yes change your belt, its not that hard or that expensive.

I've had very good luck with my 7th gen and I drive the snot out of it. its held up amazingly well for a 100k mile car thats been flogged for 4 years. Only thing that let me down was the stock struts and shocks, a set of dspecs with the stock springs took care of that. Its not some wonder car but its certainly no slouch
