need a DIY for installing amp/subs
i've searched everywhere (I.C.E. and DIY sections) but can't find a DIY for installing amp/subs. I got amp install kit, but i have no idea how to set this up and where the firewall is and all. any directions guys? or if anyone from Chicagoland set this up for me???
thanks in advance

It's pretty straight forward, although it cna be a little tricky and definitely time consuming.
The firewall is the wall between the itnerior of the car and the engine bay. The best way to get through it would probably be under the glove compartment, if you look under the carpet a little, you'll see a rubber grommet that you can squeeze the power cable through.
The hardest part of all this might be running that power cable from the battery to the trunk where your amp will be.
Do you have all the equipment yet? What subs and amps? Aftermarket HU? Replacing/amping door speakers?
I'm in Champaign, IL, might be able to help some.

the subs and amps are some old ones that i bought it off from my friend. the subs are JL, but don't know what amps they are and HU is pioneer. lol, don't know the names of them.
i have the amp installation kit. is that all i need or do i need more cables? i opened the box up and there were bunch of wires. and i'm not replacing my door speakers. this is my first time getting a soudn system, so i just wanted to start small.
i just have a question, when going through the firewall, did you cut the rubber grommet a little and feed the wires through there, or what???

if youve never had any alarm or stuff installed, there might not be a hole meaning you have to drill one after pulling off the rubber boot.
Your installation kit should have come with the following:
Power wire - Single wire, probably the largest of the ones you got
Ground wire - Same size as the power wire but shorter
Remote wire - Small gauge single wire
RCA's
Speaker wire.
In-line fuse.
Run the speaker wire from the battery to wherever you are putting your amp. To get it through the gromet I used a coat hanger, straightened it out and poked it through the gromet. Then I used a lot of tape and taped the power wire to the coat hanger tapering the width of the coat hanger up to the width of the power wire. Ihad someone slowly pull the coat hanger through whilst I pushed the power wire from inside the car. I was able to get 4 gauge throuh pretty easily.
The in-line fuse goes close to the battery.
The RCA's connect from the HU to the amp. You want to run the RCA's and the power wire in different places. So, if you run the power wire down the passenger side run the RCA's either down the middle or down the drivers side.
The remote wire runs from the remote wire on the HU to the amp.
I assume speaker wires are self explanitory
The ground goes from the deck to the car.

im gonna give you a brief rundown on how to hook this up. ok, pay attention. if you cant get it after this, burn your stereo equipment. first disconnect your battery. find the biggest, longest wire that came with the "amp install kit". thats the power wire. now you need to run your power wire from the battery to where youre mounting your amp. dont hook the power wire up to the battery yet. make sure you put the inline fuse holder close to the battery in the power wire. now find a long, skinny blue wire. thats the remote wire. you need your headunit out for this one. you should see a blue wire in the harness for the headunit that doesnt hook up to any other wires. connect your remote wire to that and run it to the amp. get out the rcas and do the same. put your headunit back in. once you have your amp mounted, find the short fat black wire. thats the ground wire. find a suitable location to ground the amp and secure the wire. run speaker wires from the amp to the subs. without a fuse in the fuseholder, hook the original positive battery cable and your positive amp cable to the battery. make sure all wires are hooked up into the amp. put a fuse in the fuseholder. turn the key and make sure you dont see any smoke or smell an electrical fire. and that should be about it.
note: the wire colors i spoke of may be different colors if you have one of those goofy kits with blue and clear wires and ****. in any case, the longest fattest wire is the positive + wire. the shortest fattest wire is the negative - wire. the long skinny wire which is usually always blue is the remote wire. and speaker wire is self-explanitory, or you would think before you read this thread. hahahaha. anyway, hope this helped. pm or email me if you have any questions.

Guys, where is a decent place to mount the amp? I looked at the top of the trunk but not sure about that. I would like to NOT place it on the side of the trunk because I need the trunk width. I thought under passenger seat as well but then how to mount it there with the carpet and stuff. What are your suggestions? Thanks.
