Check Engine Light clears upon restart, no codes?
Not sure I'm searchng for the right thing in the forums. Can you point me to the right thread.
Occasionally, My '02 Civic LX (Auto) (69K miles) will act odd while driving. Symptoms are as follows: while driving, engine will rev up on its own for a second, but not accel, or just rev way way down for a second. Causing the car to jerk, feels like it's on the verge of stalling. Most of the time the engine will return to 'normal'. Sometimes while driving the tach and temp gauges will suddenly fall to 'zero' and the transmission will stop shifting. I'll be stuck in whatver gear I am in until I restart the car. When the gauges stop responding, the check engine lite comes on. The mechanic I took it to said there were no codes, and that the car is fine.
In this thread (233373), seems like jta is having the same issue, but I did not see a solution.
Anyone had this experience? What was the fix -- o2 sensor?? is it possible for the check engine light to come on without a corresponding code?

Sounds like an ignition issue. Intermittent ones are tough to solve. If the CEL comes on, it should stay on, but if the car stalls, all the lights come on including the CEL, so because the car stalls, doesn't mean there's a code. Check the coil packs, and the spark plugs, and see if anything looks bad. I'd start there. If you seem to be having other electrical issues as well, you're going to have to dig deeper, check the ECU itself, also if you have a realtime diagnostic scanner, plug it into the OBD port, stream the numbers out of the ECU while you drive and have someone sit and watch the RPMs and temps the computer is reading. If your gauges are flickering but the computer is reading constant, then look at the cluster. If everything flickers together, its gonna get fun.
PS- It helps to just post a link to the thread if you're making reference.

THanks boilermaker. Most of that stuff is way over my head. I guess I'll just suck it up and pay for more diagnostics on the car.

I tried initially posting a link to the thread, but the forum software barfed it up on me, saying I did not have enough posts. Thanks for the help!
